Douk Audio A5 TPA3255 amp. $80 wonder
« on: 17 Apr 2025, 08:24 pm »
I am 1000% happy with the sound quality out of "cheap and cheerful" FU19/FU30 single-ended tube amp from Ali.  However, I found myself just leaving the amp on all the time, often even falling asleep leaving the amp on 24/7, which led to a little bit of tube-life anxiety.

This led me to look at some TPA3255 amps, and thanks to Ron at New Record Day, I ended up with Douk Audio A5 amp:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FEYFSTjH_4&t=1s

The version with 48V/5A power supply sells for $120 on Amazon, but in cheap-and-cheerful fashion, I was able to buy one for $80 shipped after finding one on sale (easy to do) and some small coupons (often found on-line).

My initial impression was not nearly as favorable as New Record Day.  There was the prototypical "edginess" and "no meat-on-bones," especially compared to FM30 single-ended tube amp, which many people levy against TPA3255 and class D in general.  But hey, the FM30 amp is only 4 watts and Douk A5 realistically 102 wpc/8 Ohms x2 (with 48v/5A PS).  I think we can all agree to ignore the "300 watts x2" hyperbole written on all the TPA3255 amps at this point.

Given the easy-to-remove top cover and only one opamp per channel, I started rolling some discrete opamps over the stock NE5532 opamp.  I know NRD really likes the amp with Sparkos SS3602, but it goes against my cheap-and-cheerful instincts since two Sparkos needed cost double the amp's price (I paid).  Luckily, I already had some reasonably priced discrete opamps in $11-16 range, and both the AkLIAM LC5(dual) and SX52B(dual) improved the SQ a great deal, moving the amp from decent/good to great.  The SQ improvement is such that music is now very much enjoyable without much caveat, fully detailed and engaging with less edginess and more body.  If I had to choose, I would say the AkLiam synergizes better, and I did end up using my old DEXA discrete opamps.  The combo gives sound quality that need not apologize for anything.  After I received and loved the FM30 tube amp, I ended up ordering a second one.  I just ordered a second Douk audio A5  :thumb:

If one wanted to go overboard in audiofool fashion, one can power the Douk with 36V (measures 40.8V fully charged) batteries.  Predictably, liquidity and sense of inky black background increases, with predicted hit in usability and convenience :duh:  Honestly, SQ is already excellent, already crossing that hard threshold into musicality, without the battery.

Addendum
I forgot to mention that one MUST replace the supplied power cord that comes with the 48V/5A power supply.  It's unshielded, extremely thin (~18AWG) cord and sounds craptastic, making music thinner, brighter, and just horrible.

I use an OG Volex 17604 14 AWG power cable using C8-C13 adapter, improving the SQ a ton.

I forget where I bought my adapter years ago but it's similar to this:

Thanks Jon L.  I also ordered a Douk A5 based on NRD's review. I'm pretty underwhelmed with it but I have NOT upgraded the op amps. Can you give the links for the AkLIAM op amps? Thanks

Interesting. The edginess is in the implementation and typical for this price point of retail amp. I have a very well designed Sylph Audio TPA amp going and it is quite smooth. Trade off of course it’s diy albeit still cheap and cheerful and relatively easy to get going.

Jon L,
Have you ever used a subwoofer with the A5 using the AUX OUT? I tried using a y splitter to my Rythmik subwoofers and my GR-Research Bully’s and the bass was overwhelming! The attenuator would not work. I played “Stairway to Heaven “ and my bass drivers looked like they were going to fly across the room! Anyone else have this problem? I need to know if my A5 needs to be replaced before I can’t return it.

I also have a Douk Audio A5 which is a good bit better than 2 other TPA3255 amps I have. Seemed just okay with the stock opamps. Changing to a pair of OPA1656 improved it considerably bringing more warmth and weight to the sound. Now have SX52B's in it and it may not have quite as much warmth but seems clearer and more detailed. Take that with a grain of salt as I've not gone back to the OPA1656s to compare.

It is the power supply.  I have like 5 TPA3255 amps including the TI evaluation module.  They all sound light weight compared a decent class AB amp.  Even when using a Meanwell smps.  If you spend the money on a high quality smps, like TDK Lambda, they become more comparable to a traditional amp.  That puts you beyond the cheap and cheerful category though.

I bought the A5 based on Danny’s video and haven’t been disappointed. I have the 48v power supply with mine. The least Class D sounding amp of all the Class D amps I have. I found some OPA2134PA op amps and so far they have hit the sweet spot. I still have several options in the wing to try.

I don't understand.  the Douk A5's Aux out is unfiltered full-range signal that will not change volume with the volume knob in front of A5.  Don't your subwoofers have volume controls on them?

Hi Jon,

Here is my volume control on the back of my subs. I didn’t adjust them as I thought the A5 would control them. Spoke with Danny and he said that you should not use a class D amp with the Rythmiks  as class D amps don’t have any ground. I confirmed that on their website.
Cheap audio man did a video on A5 where he says that the Aux out is NOT a subwoofer out and if you use it as one, you can’t control the voltage that goes to your sub(s).
I was using it through my AVA digital DAC with volume control. Maybe I should hook up my old AVA analog preamp?

I see what you're doing.  A5's Aux output does NOT change volume as you adjust front volume knob, so if you want your active sub to change volume to match the main speakers' volume (powered by A5), no, you can't use A5 Aux out as sub out.

"No ground" thing applies only if you use sub's "High Level In" connected to class D amp's speaker outputs.  The amp is not actually powering the sub but providing signal for the sub's amp.

So you have to either use a preamp with two sets of outputs or RCA splitter on DAC's output, one cable set to the amp and second cable set to Sub.  Changing the volume on DAC will change volume on both main speakers and sub.

I've now upgraded my A5 with a 48V/10A power supply (https://www.ebay.com/itm/266906124818?var=566643692184) and a pair of OP8802 dual discrete op amps (https://www.ebay.com/itm/283733633256). Danny and Ron are right - the upgrade in sound quality is MASSIVE. Here is a YouTube video I made with it playing some Gov't Mule:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOiDMANAyKY  Rather remarkable soundstaging, drive, instrument placement and tone for such a cheap and cheerful little amp!

Stercom,
That’s cool. Thanks for the info.  I ordered a 10A power supply. Did that make a difference?

Stercom,

Yep, you need two of them. An op amp for each channel. They are easy to install just make sure you align Pin 1 to Pin 1 (its where the little circle is located on the chip)

Was there any noticeable improvement getting the A10 power supply?

The Douk Audio website shows a chart with how much wattage you get with different power supplies. The maximum power you can get is from the 10 amp one. I ordered it from them. It won’t arrive until tomorrow.
