Introduction from old audiophile
« on: 7 Jun 2025, 07:42 pm »
Hello everyone,

My name is Jun. As many people my age (in my 60s), I was quite the audiophile when I was young. I even put together a decent system after my first job with Cary amps and Apogee speakers. But, I gave those up with family, children, etc. Now, closer to retirement, I started to put a system together and I am greatly enjoying getting back into the hobby--still not ready to drop serious bucks but still having fun. At the moment, my main focus is upgrading my speakers from Sonus Farber Venere 1.5 matched to a custom push-pull 300B from Dejavu audio (~22W). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome from a 60's something audiophile.  I am now just downsizing my gear and taking a step backward, going for ease of use and convenience from a 100 pound Pass amp and 55 pound BAT tube preamp, Magnepan 1.6 speakers to a higher end Marantz PM-10 integrated amp and very large bookshelf Arendal 1528 speakers at 66 pounds each, LOL.

Ditch the SF Venere's.  I listened to the higher end Venere's and was not impressed.  They were peaky and shouty with some music in store.  Focal Aria 968's sounded way better in store.

Thank you!

I always liked the planar-mags and electrostats, but, I still can't put in something too large. I am looking at some 2-ways and trying to figure out what will work well with modest power tubes. Currently, looking at Revel M126be and Fritz Carreras as a possibility. I do have a yamaha PF-800 for my vinyl source, which seems age appropriate for me ;)

As a 68 year old long time audiophile might I suggest active monitors (low voltage input to sophisticated crossover that feeds one monophonic amp per driver).  That's what is used in nearly all recording and mixing studios.  Highly resolving, surprising amount of deep bass, and small size.  Prices range from $300/pair for JBL 305 Mk2 to $15,000/pair for Dutch & Dutch 8C.  I switched to actives years ago.

Thank you. I checked out a few ATC actives, but for now I am attached to my 300b amp…;)
