4B3 maintenance
« on: 1 May 2025, 12:59 pm »
Hello do Bryston power amps need any kind of service after a given number of years? I have a 4B3 purchased in 2015 and I have no issues but I was wondering if it was worth a check to be safe for another 10 years ;-)

Hello anybody owns a 4B3 since 10 years? I Just would like to know if there is any service schedule to keep it fully functional and providing the best performance. Maybe anybody from Bryston could advise?

Hi Alan

We have Bryston amps from over 20 years ago that are still performing well within spec - so I would not be concerned unless something is amiss.

I will tell you a story from the past:

Jack Renner from Telarc Records would record Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown in a recoding studio in Toronto called Eastern Sound.  Whenever he would come to town he would ask me to bring down some amplifiers so he could record using Bryston amps.

One time when I was sitting in on a session the owner of Easter Sound came into the room and asked me to come with him to another studio down the hall.
Behind some glass were 6 Bryston 4B amplifiers and he asked me - "how long do you think they have been on" I said 'no idea'.
He said with a smile - 23 YEARS. :)

Not Continuously!

in 2003 (I think) there was a major power outage, that took out eastern US & Canada AC for several days.

Even with this, its still a magnificent accomplishment.

If you think back, it was Eastern Sound, old son.

My 2.5B Cubed is as old as they come, it's used every day, turned off every time there's a power failure, and it's still perfect! This is not the modern, toss it and buy a new one philosophy that's so common today.

I sent an amp in 12 weeks ago. I was told I would have it back in 8 weeks . I didn't make any call to them until last week( week 11).  I tried calling twice  and left messages but  didn't get a response. I tried again today but it goes straight to voicemail . The last time I sent an amp in ( about 15 years ago) I had it back in a week or two . I also had no problem contacting them. As it is now  I have no idea if I will get it back in a week or 6 months.  I just wish I knew and if it's going to be 2 more months or something I will have to go out and buy a relatively cheap amp to hold me over.
