Van Alstine Ultimate 70 - new build
« on: 29 Jan 2025, 11:47 pm »
I just biased a newly built ST-70 with Frank's Ultimate 70 driver board and fired music into it for the first time.  I used the highest quality components that I could find and carefully matched specs.  I took my time and the result is outstanding.  Far superior clarity in every regard to my stock ST-70, and I think higher output too, considering the position of the volume knob on my preamp that hits my ears just right.  The low end is clear, the mid range is clear, the highs are almost lyrical... absolutely the best sounding amp I've ever owned (or built).  Thanks to Frank, for his genius with this circuitry.  I'll never part with this thing.

Attaching some photos because in addition to sounding great, it looks pretty cool too.

Congratulations. Would love to hear how it sounds with the upgraded parts. May I suggest GE 6GH8A tubes. Really woke up my Ultimate 70 build.

I will never part with mine - Ultimate 70. It has a Sowther transformer from UK since it’s 230 volt in my country.

Very nice, neat work! Do you mind detailing what parts you upgraded in which part(s) of the circuit (both power supply and main driver/output stages)? Also are you considering getting improved output transformers for your build?

Enjoy your hard work!

Best,
Anand.

Very nice. I see a lot of top shelf parts in your build. Audio Note Electro's.. Kiwame, TKD, Amstrans AMRG, & looks like some Takman & vishay-dale resistors.

I actually just finished an Ultimate 70 build last week. I've built a couple in the past but this time I did a brand new build as well. Chassis & every part was new. This one I used output transformers from a company I've never used before..Pacific Audio. I had bought them some time early last year when a lot of the regular sellers were out of stock.

I was a little hesitant to order them because the price was pretty cheap..$140 a piece. The transformer makes or breaks the sound. I took a chance, ordered them, within like 3 maybe 4 weeks they wound them & had them delivered.

This amp performs better than the ones that I used original iron. Makes me wonder if the older transformers were a little off. The bass is not as loose & bloated. Better space & depth with my new build. Nice full weighty sound with still the detail & clarity. I am impressed.

It's nice to see other people still building the Ultimate 70. I think it's a very nice amp for not a lot of money to build.

Fixed. Sometimes the site seems to do that when uploading photos.
