Bryston BDP3 Questions
« on: 26 Mar 2025, 02:03 pm »
Hello Bryston Community,

I am the newly proud owner of a BDP3 (and matching BDA3) and I have a few questions for the experts.  I am sure these have been covered, but because I am new to the forum I cannot search yet, so please forgive me.

1. Do you have any recommendations for a good MPD app for iOS?  As a current LMS user I find Manic Moose to be kind of clunky and it won't even load all my albums for certain artists.  iPeng isn't great, but work well once you get the hang of it, but it doesn't support MPD.

2. The BDP3 comes with 8GB of RAM, will upgrading it to 16GB or 32GB help with large libraries not loading in Manic Moose?  Will the OS even recognize more than 8GB?

3. Finally, The unit currently has a 4TB SSD installed which is not large enough to hold my library, so I currently am using a NAS.  I would like to use the SSD.  If I purchase an 8TB drive will the BDP3 recognize it and be able to utilize an SSD of that size?

Thanks everyone!

Thanks.  I was looking at that and Maximum MPD.  I figure I would start with the latter since it is free and see how well it works, then try Your suggestion.  Thanks again

I enabled squeezelite on my BDP-3 and continue to use LMS and Material Skin for the interface.  Way better than Manic Moose.

Thanks, that is exactly what I wanted to do as well (since I have a number of Squeezelite endpoints already), but it does not show up in the list.  Bryston said it was discontinued and referred me to Chris when I asked if I could downgrade the firmware to get it working, but Chris hasn't gotten back to me after a couple of attempts.  Maybe he is on vacation or something

I saw the same thing after a firmware upgrade.  Chris sent me this:

You can connect to the BDP-3 using ssh with the login (username: root, password: bryston) and use the command:

/bin/bservices/Squeezelite\ start

that should enable squeezelite again.

If you're not comfortable connecting to the BDP-3 with ssh, you could try adding the command as a startup option on the BDP-3 and reboot the BDP-3.
I used ssh to run that command and also added
/bin/bservices/Squeezelite\ start
as a startup option.  I think I also checked a box to remember the MPD setting so the BDP-3 didn't automatically start MPD on a reboot.

Hope that helps!

Does it ever!!  Thank you! It works perfectly.  I don't know if there is any sound quality difference, but I can experiment with that.  If you have an opinion, I'd love to know.

Also, in case anyone else has the same question/issue.  The great tip from CMcaul will shut down MPD in order to run Squeezelite.  Also, Squeezelite will NOT show up in the list of services in Manic Moose, but it is running in the background.  Adding it to the startup is the also works.

To stop Squeezelite, you can ssh root@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx again and run the same command using the stop parameter.

/bin/bservices/Squeezelite\ stop

Thank you again!

I couldn't tell any difference, but I didn't play with MPD very long.  I've been using LMS for years and have devices all over the house.  You should try Material Skin - I like it better than iPeng.

Agree.  I use that also.  I wish I could use that on mobile devices and the classic UI on my laptop without having to switch.  Material Skin is great for playing music, but missing some of the options for configuration.

I have 5 HiFiberry Amps, 2 radios, a boom and a transporter, so I am all in on that platform!  Nice to see it brought back to the community and being further developed.

Thanks again so much for your help.
