my Home theater, 2010
« on: 17 Feb 2025, 02:13 am »
Hello just postin my theater I did in 2010.
Will be adding atmos speakers soon.
Currently I am trying to figure out this Marantz av7706. Not happy with it. With my old emotiva Movies were exciting to watch. Now Godzilla sounds like a mouse and his footsteps are weightless. Gunshot are like bb guns.
equipment: Onix Rocket 760 fronts RSC 200 center, rs250 rears with axiom qs8 sides all this combined with infinite baffle 18" fi subs,
Power:
Either Crestron1260 6 channels bridged for fronts and center rears and sides and future atmos on the rest of the channels. Or
rotel 985 and 980 power the setup. Also there is 6 kickers powered by whatever I have.

Pre-amp is AV7706 "wasted money"

Just had people over so, can only show this much the rest is messy.

Pretty nice for someone who is just "dabbling".

Gotta ask - why did you go from the Emotiva to the Marantz?

I know cringing while you're asking.

Well a moment of stupidity. I fried the emotiva LMC1 HDMI and it was older unit now a days. So I started looking around, read and watching reviews.
There were a few things that I did not like about the emotiva functionality wise. I was looking for new features 11.2 atmos, and XLR connections. Deciding between brands like Anthem, Emotiva, NAD and so on.
I got persuaded by reviews and price. I have always dislike Denon, from experience, and really wasn't going to purchase Marantz because of that. The Price and reviews sucked me in plus there is no real store to listen to that equipment in my area, so I had to base my decision on what I read.
Mind you, I want my movie experience to be in your face, like a 1000hp Deisel RatRod blowing carbon and smokin tires next to a Kindig It show rod.

I know, strange. However it doesn't make sense that huge explosions and gigantic Jaegers walking around don't put you on your knees.

It could be I just haven't worked it out yet. The Audyssey setup turns my sub to -12 "basically off" and center channel to -5. Its like aaah thats not what I want in watching action movies.

I'm done ranting now, from here on out looking for solutions.

Thanks for listening.

I own a Denon, which is very similar to Marantz (same parent Company I believe).
I run audyssey as a “starting point” to establish room EQ. I then go into manual setup to adjust levels. You can play around with sub levels easily. I just make sure that no channel is in the “+” range for volume and keep the relative values from audyssey (which channels are louder vs softer). You can double check using a db meter and a test disc with test tones.
IMO, YMMV, etc.
While my Denon won’t match the performance of good separates, I think it’s pretty good. I do use the pre-outs for the front channels to a separate amp, freeing up the internal up from much of the demands placed on it.

I read a lot of reviews when I needed to replace my surround processor. The only brand that had almost 100% positive reviews was Anthem. I bought the Anthem AVM60 in 2019 and have been very happy with my choice for 6 years. My amps are a mix of Van Alstine and Adcom for a total of 1315 watts. The sub is a REL G1 MkII (-6 dB at 15Hz). I never run my 7.1.4 home theater at full volume because it would be too loud.

Anthem processors don't have all the latest bells and whistles but I really like their ARC room correction, every single parameter can be adjusted. The ARC setup with the supplied microphone gets me close but there is always fine tuning by hand with a sound meter to get the sound to match the state-of-the-art theater in town.

Thank you for your input. I will go through the setting and Audyssey a 4th or 5th time. A long with switching amps.

I love this! That would keep me occupied for days. And now from further reading from later reviews, people are saying lack of bass from the Marantz gear. I may need to do more reading on setup, and try some apps/programs to adjust the setting. Emotiva was so much easier.

I would manually set up the AVR and get the room correction out of it with your second preset in the preamp. Make sure the front are set to large. Side and rears to small. I would probably set the cross over at 250hz on the subs and adjust from there from there. Manually adjust the volume and eq for each individual channel. Allow your towers the do the heavy lifting. I bet you will find your dynamics again.
