MoFi SourcePoint 8 crossover update?
« on: 20 Mar 2025, 11:13 am »
Hi Danny, I'm a solid customer of yours for my Klipsch RP8000f's and RP504C. I have a pair of MoFi SourcePoint 888's, and been using my Klipsch RP504C for center, as MoFi doesn't make a dedicated center. I find the RP504C horizontal dispersion not very good in my home theater, unless staying in the two center seats (I have a row of 4 seats 12' from speakers). I just found a separate Sourcepoint 8 for sale, ordered and received to use as my center. I checked your review and a few others, and it seems horizontal dispersion is pretty good. My question, knowing the SourcePoint 8 will be used as a center channel, and crossed over at 100Hz (REW shows 100Hz is optimal), with dialogue being the main output, would your crossover mod be beneficial, and if so what level of parts?
Thanks,
Tom

Hello everyone, my original question is not getting any reply's, that's okay, maybe its a dumb question, and I'm not wording it very well. Let me ask another more basic question. For those that have done the crossover upgrade on your SourcePoint 8, how did it go (I heard its tight inside the box?), what level of parts, and how do you like the sound compared to stock crossover?
Thanks,
Tom

A common rule of thumb for home theater is the front three channels should be either the same speaker or use the same drivers.  That way you have the same sonic signature across the front.

By mixing speaker brands you’re going to have a different sound signature between the center and fronts.  It might work fine but I would expect slight tonal differences.  The only way to know how well it works is to try it and listen for yourself.

Exactly! That's why I just changed my Center to the same company as my L+R. Now all three are MoFi Electronics SourcePoint. The question is concerning the crossover upgrade.

The Sonicaps upgrade will definitely improve vocals and clarity.  At least that’s been my experience with them.

Thanks, this is sort of the response I am expecting, and like to hear. We all like reinforcement sometimes. I look forward to updating the crossovers in my MoFi's. I will wait until (hopefully) there's a crossover update for the 888's, and then do all three at the same time. I've only had the new SourcePoint 8 center hooked up for two days (horizontally, don't think it matters), but what a difference from my RP504C, like night and day. I have 4 seats, so no one seat is exactly in the middle. If I sit in either of the middle two seats the RP504C is okay, but when I move to either outside seat, understanding the dialogue is tough. With the new SourcePoint 8 center, all four seating positions are great for dialogue. I lose a little mid-bass according to REW, but that's okay. My main hope of accomplishment was wider dispersion, and the SP 8 delivers.

Our upgrade improves them in all areas. It will allow them to have clarity that will significantly surpass what you are getting from the 888 as well.

Looking forward to upgrading the MoFi's. I can't bring myself to shipping one of these 100 Lb beasts. Hopefully someone close by will drive an 888 to you.
Thanks,
