No-Res for damping steel speaker stands?
« on: 4 Dec 2024, 11:38 pm »
I've been researching various filling materials for damping my steel Pangea speaker stands. Lots of suggestions in the audio forums ranging from the sand, lead shot, cat litter, etc.

So, I wondered today if I could use some of Danny's No-Res placed down inside the stand support legs to damp my speaker stands internally. It would be easy to cut into the No-Res into narrow strips and place down inside the stand's support tubes. And a lot cleaner and easier to install than sand, lead shot, or cat litter. Also would be lighter than these materials and easier to move the stands around when fine-tuning placement of the stands.

Any thoughts, gang?

The other option would be sound dampening pads for cars. I've used them before for other things with decent results. The best I would say are from RBL and part number 128. They are about ⅛" thick black rubber pad and adhesive on one side. Think NoRez without the foam layer.

I put a layer on the top of top plate and underneath the bottom plate of my Pangea stands, but I also filled the uprights with sand with great improvement. A single bag of playground sand from Home Depot does wonders. If your stands have a cutout for cable routing, I would suggest taping up the bottom hole, fill that tube with sand as well, and tape up the top hole. I used foil backed tape and sharpie to make it all black. Point being, sound deadening pad works pretty good, but filling the uprights with sand does much better for cheaper. Also my stands only hold maybe 15# of sand each, so weight isn't a big concern.

Just guess work. Sand is a proven method. Convenience over function may not do it. Fine tune speakers first. Then fill accordingly.

I agree, sand is the way to go.

I recently filled my Pangea stands, they have holes in one of the 3 tubes for cables and pretty much no way to fill the other 2. I purchased rubber plugs from Amazon, drilled 3/4 holes in them, filled with sand and plugged the holes. This made a huge difference in the ringing of the narrow steel tubes. I also used sound deadening on the bottom plate, just because I had some lying around. These are much more solid and stable now.

The maker of my speaker stands strongly recommended basic, odorless kitty litter: this is just pure bentonite clay. It does not come wet like sand and deadens vibrations better. A low-dust variety works well. This is what I used, purchased from Amazon.

if it were me, I would go for the sand.

Expanding foam insulation is another option since you have hollow steel tube's. The stuff is crazy sticky so gloves and masking off areas you want clean is a good idea.

Thanks guys, for all the input and suggestions. I think I'm going to go with the bentonite clay cat latter, it will be easier to add and less likely to have bits of sand about the living room carpet, etc.

Cheers.
