That is a cool idea, however the 12" single woofer would probably have too much trouble extending high enough to compliment the neopanels as necessary to get adequate midbass.

Not if you used the proper 12.  I've used the Lambda 12" with the low distortion faraday motor and they work quite nicely up to about 600Hz,  Also, doesn't the RM2 use a 12"?  It's received some pretty good revieiws, so it's 12 must also work well into the mid-bass.

This thread is way off topic now since this is in the VMPS forum we should be talking about VMPS speakers.... but since the conversation is headed down this path I will chime in with my 2 cents on a DIY woofer.

PHL makes some very nice 10" and 12" drivers that can run up to over 2Khz. They are used for woofer applications and I would not call them subwoofers but for music they will get you what you are after.

I agree on the Faraday Lambda those are very nice as well.

Your drawing is not off topic but I think all of us talking about drivers, etc might be getting off topic and I wanted to be respectful of Brian since this is his thread and he has been clear that he uses his own drivers.

Please do not get me wrong this is great conversation.

Hi DMF,

Welcome to the VMPS circle.

In looking at your drawing, what makes the design similar to the RM/x?

The RM/x has specific qualities that make it sound superior to most anything else, and one of the most significant (and as well the reason for its high cost) is the reduced baffle area so that baffle defraction is virtually eliminated.

In looking at the design, it seems you have "substantially increased" the baffle area considerably.  In fact it is even much larger than the RM30, and for much of its length the RM40.

Both the RM40 and RM30 would likely provide the performance to value you are looking for, in comparison to the RM/x (especially with a couple tweaks :wink: ) and they're already in the lineup.

You guys should read Vance Dickason's Loudspeaker Design Cookbook.  It's quite interesting. I spent many hours researching on designing and building my own speakers.  Even a small two way can be problematic to execute well.  Also asking questions on the Madisound and PE boards taught me that this is far more complicated than most people think, which is why I decided against it.
