Hello, all, newbie here!
I've been at this hobby since 7th grade staring with my Grandfather's Dyna and Mac system.
I'm now working on setting up and tweaking my current gear into the house I bought 3 years ago. Philips tuner, BAT CD and Preamp, Thorens TD160C with stock arm and Precision Fidelity strain gauge pick up system, Sunfire 10" powered sub, Sunfire 2 600W@8 ohm stereo amp, SoundLab Aura ESL's and several Stax earspeaker pieces including an SR14 integrated.

Comments on this topic.
A couple of factors seem to contribute to the seeming 'decline' of audiophilia. First, convenience/cost. The industry started to move from separate components with discrete circuitry to integrated components with integrated circuity. This led to several things: prioritized convenience (fewer pieces) reduced costs (fewer parts, lighter and cheaper cases, power supplies, etc. which generated higher profits) as well as a reduced audio output quality (more noise, less dynamics, reduced real frequency response). As a result, less good new gear was available for existing audiophiles, and newer/youn ger aficionados' first exposure to  this hobby was to sonically 'lesser' gear.'

Additionally, there was the advent of digital technology, b oth CD and PC. Our first CD discs and players were convenient and clean (and impressive) but didn't approach analogue for the sonic experience. PC's made it easy to create music without being a musician, hence not having an appreciation of tone quality, color, imaging and soundstage, blend, etc. Expectations were greatly lowered and are only now returning to some degree with the resurgence in vinyl, tape and other 'old school' analogue mediums.

I'm sure I will enjoy reading the comments of others on this topic.

Welcome!

I have some nibs to raise with your post:

1.)  Integration of components does not necessarily downgrade performance and is often used to meet a price point.  For a given price integrated is more cost effective in terms of sound quality/dollar.  In fact synergy between components can be superior if left to the manufacturer and saves the cost/quality issues associated with interconnects/extra power supplies, etc.

2.)  Digital lacks vinyl surface noise (which drives me crazy) and has twice the potential dynamic range.

3.)  Where are you getting your digital sources from?  99% of all recordings come from professionally produced digital masters.

Hello, all, and thanks for letting me in!
I've been into this stuff since the days of the Lafayette Electronics catalogue!
I'm currently setting up my last system that's been in storage for 20+ years, as I now have a house with a listening room!
Gear:
Thorens TD160 Super updated w/new heavier plinth (solid cherry), original TP-12(?) arm, EP450C strain gauge cart and Precision Fidelity pre-pre for the cart;
Philips AH6731 AM-FM tuner DeWick modded;
BAT VK 5SE CD;
BAT 30SE Pre;
Sunfire 600 II Signature Load Invariant amp;
Sunfire True Sub Signature 10" powered sub (active and passive drivers);
Panamax M5400 power conditioner; and
SoundLab Aura 'stats

i'm looking for info on modern (not the '70's technology that I currently own) strain gauge electronics and want to get folks experiences with modded Panasonic units, updated/modded Precision Fidelity units, DIY units, Soundsmith pre-pre's and the Phaedrus Groove Sleuth II.

I look forward to meeting many of you1

Thanks,
Bob
