trying to confirm flaw in my xr-50
« on: 25 May 2005, 02:26 pm »
I just picked up a panny xr-50 and have a question that seems to have an obvious answer but I want to confirm it before I take the reciever back.

When I hook speakers up to the "A" channel that uses the 4mm binding posts I get a completely different sound then when I hook the same speakers up to the "B" channel with the spring clips.

Using the binding posts I have almost no low end. In fact I would say that it's got a hollow sound and that there is a pretty fast roll off in the lower mid-bass range.

Ne1 have any feedback on this issue.

This sux cause I had to be kinda pushy to get them to sell me the last floor model and now it appears that there is something wrong with it. Pretty much par for me :-)

I think you will have to set the speakers to large size somewhere in the menu ..read the manual.

AEA has it correct. You have to go through the very user unfriendly set-up menu.

If you are just going to use it two channel, you need to turn off the center and surrounds and sub and run the fronts on large. The default from the factory is all speakers turned on and set to small.

thanks, I'll have a better look at the what Panasonic considers to be a manual. I do have it set as 2 speakers only but the large small thing would certainly have been easy enough to over look. Here is hoping.

on a side note, a pair of Acoustat 2 's sold for $52 on ebay yesterday and I missed them by a few minutes.  Has nothing to do with this thread but none of my friends know what Acoustats are so I needed to say something where my dissapointment might be understood. None of my amps could push a pair of them but that doesn't make it any better.

neway, thanks. Your explanation is exactly why I posted here as the pannies symptoms didn't seem logical to me.

The information you need is on page 21 of the owners manual. You need to go into setup 2 to change the speakers from small to large.

all is well with my xr50. The difference I noted between the two front channels was due to the fact that I had changed the setting from small to large right about the time I changed my speakers from one channel to the other.

It must have been the overly technical terminology that threw me. Small ->Large :-)

I guess it never entered their mind that size is a relative. My normal speakers are floor standing with each housing 2 1970's Infinity 12"'s, 1 1973 KLH 2 3/4" dome mid and an ar3 tweeter in a D'Appolito config. They are quite large. My test speakers are a pair of bookshelf size Mission 2 way's. By Panasonics definition they are both large.

The amp sounds pretty good. I am going down to buy some new interconnects as my 30 year old amp did not offer digital inputs. I'm hoping that the soundstage steps forward and opens up with this change.
So far I am impressed with the speed of the amp. It's quite tight and ruthlessly revealing. I look forward to hearing the Infinity ribbons on it.

I'm a pure vintage guy so this is all new to me. I only bought my first cd player a couple of years ago and only last year decided that a DVD might be worth owning. My friends find it odd seeing as I've been in the IT biz for approx 12 years :-)

Thanks for the help. I'll post off and on as I try this amp out with various vintage speakers.

well I though that the small/large speaker designation was a stupid terminology choice made by Panasonic but I was talking to Jay tonight and his $10,000 B&K uses the same terminology in the same context.
