Any one tried Almarro/Omega combo?
« on: 23 Mar 2005, 07:14 am »
Hi all Omega users,

I recently got a Almarro A205A SET (EL84 w/ 4.8W per channel). Does any one of you tried this amp. and/or the said combo before?

I would like to let a pair of Grande 6R be the new partner of this compact-sized amp.

Regards,

Michael

Michael:

I have the almarro a-318 which is an 18 watt per channel SET and I like it very much. However, at the rave, lone wolf hooked up his baby sofia el84 amp and I enjoyed it more than anything else I heard at that rave. It, I think has 10 watts per channel and it was plenty. I think Louis really believes 5 watts is plenty, but I haven't heard anything that low powered.

P.S. Louis is making or is having made an Omega el84 amp, but hasn't given details yet.  I would think this means he thinks they are a good match. I will probably buy it when it comes out - but that is just me.

best of luck
John

John....The Sophia Baby did sound very good with the Omega speakers, I still remember the Jazz cuts....and yes, it ten watts. Just ordered some NOS tubes for it...four 6P1T's and two 5670's. Since I've loaned out some equipement this week, getting to play with the Baby again....nice !!! 8)

Louis' EL84 amp.

jrdcesq,

I won't consider others except SET. If Louis' new EL84 amp is SET, I may ask him whether he'll ship me one, which can be used in Hong Kong, i.e. 220v.

Almarro A205A's output should be adequate to drive most single-drive loudspeakers (SDL) and EL84 is easy to buy.

Hi Michael,

I have the A205 and the best match is the Super 3s. I've tried all the speakers with it and like the Super 3s best with the amp. The new hemp is also a good, but I have a lot of figuring to do about prices.

Thanks again,
Louis

My final decision

Hi Louis,

Thanks for sharing your experience in partnering A205A with various models. I just sent my order to you. My final decision is a pair of Grande 6R.

A few more questions:

1) Will there be new model to replace Grande 6/6R as you mentioned that there will be something new to be released soon? Or will there be new drivers mounted on Grande 6/6R? Should I better wait for a while?

2) Can Cardas terminal posts (used on R models) accept banana plugs other than spade plugs?

3) How long (in terms of hours) I should take to run-in Grande 6R?

4) The optimal height of the driver facing the audience (ear). Will the sound be heavily deteriorated when the driver unit is above/below the audience (ear)?

Thanks.

Michael

Hi, Michael

I own an Almarro A205-A that I used with my Super 3Rs.  A good match, though I now use a Fi X 2A3.

One thing I found out about the Almarro: changing the driver tube (12AX7) to one by another manufacturer can have a HUGE impact on the amp's sound, much more than changing the output tubes.

For example, I replaced the stock tube with a Telefunken smooth-plate and the sound became very, very bright.  For me it was not a good match.  I ended up using a 1960s-vintage Raytheon 12AX7.

I hope this helps and I hope you enjoy your speakers.
