Some of the best vinyl reproduction I've heard in years.  Sure, other playback mediums provide us more 'blackness' around the notes, but the soundstage and and reverb tails are unmistakably analog.  CD just can't match this and will always strive to imitate it.  Even with how fantastic this already sounds, I am sure it could be greatly improved with a Monster SCSI cable on the scanner and perhaps an upgraded power cable as well.  Additional scanner mods may include an improved light source and super polished glass.  Perhaps freezing the scanner first would be a plus.

All this from an MP3 no less!

Wow.  What an interesting experiment.  The MP3's on the site sounded awful to me... It's full of heavy swirly digital sounds, pops, and overall muddled sound.  However, I really liked the experiment.

I'm planning on trying to rip some CD's from records so, I found this interesting.  I think I'll just stick to plugging the turntable into my soundcard.

Seems like if you are going to this much trouble, that you would get better results with .wav files or at least compressed REAL files rather than MP3's. These will make any music sound like a boom-box.

Steve,

REAL files?  You mean like real audio?  Real audio, with all due respect, sucks blankety blank.  MP3's are far superior to real audio files.  But I agree .wav would have been better.  I think the site owner was probably just showing readers that in fact it worked and made the mp3's really compressed for traffic restricting reasons.

the concept that it is possible is interesting enough to me ;-)

anyway, I doubt it is a serious attempt at high quality reproduction...
