Hello from Chicagoland
« on: 26 Apr 2023, 04:04 pm »
Hi there - new member here.  GenXer looking to tap into the community of folks who appreciate quality audio.  If I had to limit myself to listening to a single decade of music for the rest of my life (which I find is a fun ice-breaker question for folks who listen to a lot of music), mine would be 1976-1985, although I would miss a lot of music I like from 1959-1975.  My current systems have digital front ends and/or integrated amps with American or English speakers.  Favorite pieces of gear to date are my Lyngdorf TDAI-3400 (love the room correction) and Magico A5 speakers.  Look forward to the discussion.  Kind regards - Andy

Yeah those speakers looks like they can Rock!
The '70's was a great time for music especially for rock and electronic music was emerging but really didn't take off until the invention of the polyphonic synth. I remember being at a demo for I think it was the Jupiter 8. Until that time with synths I think you could only press one key at a time, something like that.
I got into computer audio early around the early 2000's and it wasn't very good back then. But now my source is strictly through the computer and IMO doesn't take the back seat to any other source. :smoke:

Welcome to AudioCircle, Andy!

I am the last of the boomers so I also appreciate the decade of music you refer to. I think of it as Elton John to Talking Heads haha. I was very fortunate to experience the world for the first time with such an inspiring soundtrack, and I still partake of it often. I remember one Saturday morning in spring 1983 while washing my car listening to Casey Kasem American Top 40 on the car radio I heard the debut songs of Culture Club, Duran Duran and Dexys Midnight Runners all in the same week, and probably a new song from MJ Thriller in there too.

Do you like vintage music bc you prefer it to contemporary music? Or do you just like both new and old?
My genZ kids say they don't like today's pop music, but they do listen to some of it and attend concerts. My middle kid likes rap and he has taught me to appreciate some of the better stuff, even though I lived through the sacrifice of the music industry on the altar of rap and have my own negative bias towards it, I was surprised to hear how good some of the new rap really is. I thought my system was very capable because I like loud symphonies and jazz big bands, but I need a few more subs to do his music justice.

I like room correction too, I use ARC Genesis <500Hz.

Thanks for the responses/welcome.

@MAG - I had to look up polyphonic synth, so thanks, and fully agree.  Late 70s were interesting period of creativity and new technology (e.g. synths) likely played a key role which I didn't really appreciate until you mentioned it.  One interesting thing about new wave/electronic music (say New Order/Depeche Mode) is that the track (instrument and vocal) definitions are often more clearly defined, so it pushes / stretches your system in a different way than say studio recorded rock music or jazz or classical.

@Richidoo - well said : Elton John to Talking Heads.  Early 80s with American Top 40 is where most of us first "downloaded" music by waiting by the tape deck for our song to come on so we could record it.  For new music, try to be force myself, but for sure have a preference for established artists and styles.  I get a little inspiration from WXRT in Chicago that plays new releases/new music vs always listening to the two classic rock stations which gets boring.  My four kids fortunately like/tolerate my music, but they listen to new stuff they sometimes share with me - so similar to your GenZ kids I think.  I haven't listened to much rap (beyond Rapture by Blondie if that counts :)), so need to be more open minded like you.

Welcome! I am considering the Magico A5's as well as the Bryson Model T's. What did you compare when choosing your A5's?
