Dodd preamp tubes
« on: 2 Oct 2023, 02:23 am »
Hey all - I know it is not quite the right circle but that a lot of folks here currently have or have previously had Dodd preamps.

Does anyone have notes on tubes that they liked in it, particularly ones on the warmer side? I am very happy to have just bought one and was going to get a second pair of tubes pretty quickly since it is supposed to take well to rolling.

I've tried dozens over the years, and they are all different.  I think I've had Valvo 7308 in longer than any others.  I also liked Lorenz, and Seimens.  If you're looking for warm, try Mullards.

NoahH,
Do you have the original larger Dodd Preamp or the variable gain version?

The earlier ones used the 7308 like Scott indicated.

The newer variable gain version uses 6h30 style larger tubes.  For those, the OTK stamped ones are very good.  Those also apply to the Dodd Buffer.

The buffer/zero (unity) gain version of that preamp also uses the 6h30 tube.

It's the larger original, so the smaller tubes

I have not even heard of valvo. Mullards are high on my list - good to hear that said again.

I am using this with a PS Audio BHK250 on NX-tremes, and I think a little warmth would do that system well. The BHK has 6922s in it I believe as well.

Don't overlook 7dj8 tubes as well.  They work, sound excellent, and can be a bit cheaper than the 6dj8 tubes.
Also, look at older Tungsram (Hungary manufacture) .  Also on the warm side- I like them better than Mullard in the Dodd.

I'm the same here, I use the Valvo 7DJ8s most and the Siemens second. The Siemens I find a little more lively but only slightly. The Matsushita PCC88 7DJ8 are good as well and are priced right closer to the Siemens I find than the Volvo's.

Using a NOS Reflector with VG results.
