idea for my ultimate speaker build
« on: 15 Jun 2023, 06:06 pm »
Hi there, I want to restart my hobby by building a ultimate speaker: based on the Seas Thor/Odin but with a better bass. Something that looks/sounds like the "Tyler Acoustic Linbrook signatures"

The following units are on the list:

- 1x T25CF002 tweeter
- 2x W18E001 woofer
- 2x W22NX001 subwoofer

Has someone experience with a configuration like this?

Thanks, Ido

Welcome to AudioCircle, Ido!

Those drivers are excellent, from the SEAS Excel line, but they have been around for a long time. There may be newer drivers that offer more performance for similar price. SB Acoustics (former ScanSpeak engineers) makes a line called Satori in Indonesia which is very high performance and high value.

"Ultimate speaker" can have many different meanings. Last speaker, best speaker, etc.
The one you pictured has emphasis on appearance so it uses multiple smaller bass drivers.
Technically, a single larger bass driver would have advantages, but it's not as easy to package or get approval from the decorator.

Welcome to AC. Your ideas for what drivers to use in your ultimate speaker may evolve.

Jim Salk is selling his raw speaker inventory, there will probably be terrific deals on excellent speakers.

"These include drivers from Accuton, Seas, Wavecor, SB Acoustics, Fostek, Transducer Labs, Dayton Audio, FAL, and more.  And this is just the beginning.
We have 10 TC Sounds passives, 4 Custom 10" woofers (used in the SS10's), 15" subwoofer drivers, plate amps and more.
We'll have tons of crossover parts available as well."

What you're proposing is a typical box speaker with decent parts. There's not much that's "ultimate" about it. If you want something that looks/sounds like the Tyler Acoustic Linbrook Signatures, then buy a used pair of them or one of Tyler's newer versions. With Tyler's relatively low prices, it might be best to buy rather than build.

Welcome to the AC!

It's a pleasure to welcome a fellow speaker builder.

I've heard the Tyler Acoustics, and they sound pretty wonderful... very balanced, which I think is the hardest attribute to achieve in any speaker design.

It sounds like you have a design in mind already but if you should ever want to consider DIY hybrid electrostats, I can hook you up with a cutting edge design (drawings, parts list, etc...) that's absolutely world class.

Enjoy the AC!

Welcome!

Passive, sealed/ported, MTM have all been done.  Recommend looking at active monitors that can outperform passives.  Of course that takes you out of the realm of DIY or entry level professionals.  Would suggest something along the line of Buchardt A10 or move up to the Kid Audio Three BXT if you have deep pockets.

What's your audio goals?  What is the room like that this "ultimate" loudspeaker will be performing in?  (Can't design the ultimate loudspeaker without accounting for the room.)
