Onix Ref 1 x-over upgrade
« on: 22 May 2023, 09:34 pm »
I know GR had some relationship with AV123 which also sold the Onix branded speaker. I have a pair of the Ref. One monitors. A decent speaker IMO.  Someone actually gave me them and have to say sound much better than expected. Seeming stout cabinet, Vifa Ring radiator tweeter and an Atohm 5" mid. (don't know much about this French company's products) So wondering having had some sort of relationship of you would have any data on the x-over component values. I know I could open up and probably get the numbers of the caps and maybe resister, but I don't think they stamp inductors. Of course I suppose I could just send you the board.

Which brings up another subject, What do you charge to evaluate the board?

Sorry if this topic has been covered. I've been away from audio and this forum for many years now. Life it seems just got in the way.

Skiing Ninja used to offer XO upgrades for this speaker and he was an AV123 employee. I have a pair of fully upgraded Ref 1’s with Sonicap platinum bypass caps. They are fantastic. Great speakers for sure. Danny can likely work some magic. I wouldn’t be surprised if he developed Ninja’s upgrade back them considering he developed a lot of AV123 speakers.

Thanks,
Robert

We designed upgrades for the whole Ref series product line.

Shot me an email on them and I'll dig out the details.

I have all of the before and after measurements as well.

Filled out the form on your site to request the upgrade. I moved out my Merlin TSM-MMe from my desktop system to listen to these. IMHO these are pretty damn good speakers for the money. Right now listening to a very good Lyle Lovett recording and it sounds good. Nothing seems problematic. Of course looking for better clarity and resolution. Clear up what I call a bit of 'smearing' especially in low mid.

But, unless I'm crazy......this speaker is not at all embarrassed by the twice the price Merlin.
