Intro and OP speaker recommendation
« on: 29 Mar 2023, 09:46 pm »
Hey guys/gals.  My name is Leonard.  I have upgraded many components but have had same speakers for 20 years.  Definitely next to upgrade and open baffle technology intrigues me.

I was going to search for comparisons between what seem to be the leading Open Baffle speakers - Pure Audio Project and Spatial Audio.  But as a newbie I cannot search yet.

I first heard of Spatial X4s, but ran across PAP.  Both seem to have lots of fans.  On PAP, thinking of Quartet 15" in white (not Classic), probably with horn.

Questions/feedback:

1.  If I really can only get 2'7" max from front of speaker to front wall (which Ze'ev from PAP has said should be sufficient), should I still consider or should I eliminate OB technology from consideration?
2.  Any good reasons to prefer one of these brands over the other?  My partner definitely likes the PAP design aesthetic a bit more, and have heard maybe production issues at Spatial, which collectively have me leaning a bit more toward PAP.

Thanks.

PS - current Amp is Parasound A21

  • To whom more was given more will be required.

Since OB speakers are plain jane you would buy the drivers and lend them tô a wood worker tô assemble a panel tô you.

Hi and welcome to the AC Leonard,

Regarding your questions; 2' 7" is do-able, especially if you can rotate the speakers a bit so they are not parallel to the wall behind them.

The Spatials are a fine choice; although a bit pricey for what you get, IMHO.

Since you're in the market for new speakers, perhaps I could interest you in a new/unused pair of the finest OB speakers I've ever heard, and they could be had for less$$ than the Spatials.

Seriously; Spatials are fine speakers but they can't compare to what I build.

BTW; I'm a long-time electrostatic loudspeaker designer/builder who no longer builds speakers but I happen to have an unused pair sitting all alone in my spare bedroom giving no one pleasure-- and they need to sing!

You can see and read all about them on my website here: http://jazzman-esl-page.blogspot.com/?m=0

The ones I will sell were built in 2021 but have not been used beyond their initial testing and burn-in. There are only seven pairs in existence and there will be no more.  A friend who has a pair sold his Legacy Whispers but kept my Jazzman MkIII ESLs, which he now refers to as his "speakers for life".

The ones I will sell are light-colored red oak with sheer black front & rear magnetic grills and include my 30-day full refund satisfaction guaranteed an a five year warranty (or my lifetime, whichever expires first, lol).

Please note that you would need to bi-amplify these speakers (4 channels x 100W minimum) using an active crossover (not included). Everyone who has these speakers uses a DBX Driverack PA2 DSP crossover which is awesome!

If you're interested; PM me or email the address on my website.

Enjoy the AC!

I cannot PM you yet since I am still a newbie but just FYI, those would not likely meet with my wife's approval.
But thanks for reaching out.
