REW Hardware Needed Setup Questions
« on: 6 Jan 2023, 12:23 am »
I am considering using REW for subwoofer setup with some Encore X-LS.

On another thread Hobbs recommend a Dayton iMM6 mic.

In addition to thay mic that has a 3.5 mm jack, what other hardware is needed.

I have watched some of the videos on REW site, and was looking at the manual.  I see that a device like the minidsp 2x4 or other devices that have RCA output that would connect to the Reciever.

I have a laptop with USB A and C, my laptop does not have a speaker out jack, and a mic.  The laptop has only one 3.5 jack.

I understand that a minidsp 2x4 would work, but not sure what are less expensive options that would work well.

I have watched a lot of REW videos, but I am not sure if someone knows of a really strait forward video for a basic setup; to just get started with REW and have some basic explanation and improvement.

I only have one sub, if the device also had a 1/4 headphone jack then I could use it for my headphones connected to the laptop for listening to music etc.

I found this simple device, but not sure if it is "good' enough for this purpose.

Behringer U-Control UCA222 USB Audio Interface https://a.co/d/fMxCwav

I also found this device which looks better:

Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen USB Audio Interface, for the Guitarist, Vocalist, Podcaster or Producer — High-Fidelity, Studio Quality Recording, and All the Software You Need to Record https://a.co/d/55PeDCw

The headphones I have are Grado SR80x, I want to get some of the Hemp Grado Headphones, or Grado RS1 at some point.

The only reason I mention the headphones is that it seems like some of the USB to audio jack devices sometimes have a volume knob etc.

I also found this device but not sure useful features versus extra complications that do not provide value, since I only to use the device for REW and perhaps headphones with Volume control, if possible.  This device is about the price of the minidsp but has other features.  I am not a musician, so musician types of features are not needed.

The Dayton Audio iMM-6 mic needs a 3.5mm TRRS style connection to use the measurement mic.  Depends on the device if it has that style of interface.  Alternatively, you can get a TRRS splitter cable if a separate mic and audio output are needed.  The mic needs the TRRS style connection to get power to run the mic.  This is typical of most Android Cell Phones and some older iPhones.

You can use an external USB sound card as your system does not have one.  Problem is a lot of external sound cards do not have TRRS powered mic inputs.  If you have a USB DAC for analog output, you can use a USB measurement mic as it gets power from the USB interface.

Perhaps a miniDSP Umik-1, would be easier for my setup.  I could just connect it to USB.

Still need to get audio output on the laptop though.

I use the U-Mic 1 plugged into a USB port on my laptop. I use an interconnect cable with a 3.5mm stereo conne tor on one end and two RCA connectors on yhe other end. The 3.5mm plug goes to the headphone jack on my laptop and the RCA connectors go to an analog input on the preamp.

The microphone is placed on a mic stand.

So with the U-Mic 1, four things needed: microphone, mic stand, computer, and interconnect cable

The imm6 just uses the headphone/microphone jack on my laptop. The only other gear I needed was a 3' 4-pole extension cable, and an Amazon basics microphone stand. Pretty much the cheapest stuff I could find and had some good results with them.

Then I use a USB cable to my PS-Audio Sprout to power the speaker/driver I'm measuring.

The Umik 1 is a good option too since it uses USB, natively without the need for adapters or special cables.

Another good thing about the U-Mc 1 is they each come with their own calibration file which is easy to download and install n REW

I do pretty much the same thing and it couldn't be easier.  The only thing I do different is that I use a USB DAC between the laptop and the preamp, but it probably doesn't make much of a difference.

Does the 3.5mm jack have a headphone and mic symbol next to it?  If so, the iMM-6 will work with REW and you can download the calibration file from the Dayton Audio website with the mic serial number.  That will be needed by REW in the setup.

You would need a 3.5mm TRS to stereo RCA adapter cable to go to the system preamp for the test signal.

The 3.5mm jack on the side of the laptop is both a mic and a headphone jack.

So I would need the Dayton mic, and this cable to go from laptop to Reciever:

Amazon Basics 3.5mm Aux Male to 2 RCA Male Adapter Audio Stereo Cable, 4 Foot, Black https://a.co/d/c8ahF6j

Is there a way to use REW to setup your speakers, other than your sub?

Are there any Receivers that can I take the REW file, and interpret it so that it can use that for calibration instead of in my case on my Marantz AVR, NR1403 uses Audissey or manual settings.  Not sure if AVR's with DIRAC can more easily interpret or integrate the REW EQ results.

Also, I need to get a sub with fully adjustable phase settings, my current sub only has 0 or 180, perhaps I could use REW to help know exactly where I should set the crossover on the sub.

What I have currently done is my Encore X-LS have the base port plugged, so I understand they should go to 80hz, so I set my sub to about 70Hz.

Perhaps it would still be useful to use REW because perhaps in my room I do or do not get 80Hz from my X-LS speakers.  Is that why it is important or helpful to use REW?

Also people say use 0 or 180 on the phase switch, whichever sounds better..  I cannot hear easily which is better, so that makes it hard, lol.  I would prefer a tool that can actually tell me.

REW measures full range for both subs and main speakers.  You need the cable you posted in the link to connect the computer soundcard output to the receiver to do the measurements.

REW has a menu of audio devices its correction files support from the measurements.
