ACOUSTIC TRIALS
« on: 29 Nov 2022, 10:30 pm »
Just a start. I will be adding lots of QRD's at some point. Will also be building dedicated corner traps "not just panels".  Having a blast shooting and interpreting data in the changes. Took shots of the bare room so I could add and measure incrementally to see "what's doing what". Just limping on one sub. I have read the master handbook of acoustics a couple times and had forgotten lots of what it contained, so doing a refresher course. Wife ordered a ton of samples from Guilford of Maine, boy you really have to look at the frequency curves of those fabrics as they all vary quite a bit.

Thanks, it's a rough draft.

Impressive treatments. Looking forward to seeing what you end up with for covers.

Hope you get a chance to experiment with Diffraction as well.

Its great you have a clean slate and a spouse that seems to enjoy the process as much as you do. Curious, are you looking at changes in the RT60 or the frequency response curves in terms of what the changes are with different positioning?

Thanks, it is like I said before, a rough draft. It is AMAZING what just a few specific abortion strategically located can accomplish. I utilized the mirror technique to find the optimum panel placement. It's interesting how the frequency response can not really display what the perceived changes are at a 1/3 octave smoothing result. One has to dig much further into not only a more resolute smoothing but looking at much more data. For instance the excessive group delay improvement not to mention the Spectrogram content, using Wavelets. I still have a long way to go with building QRD's and such, but am quite certain I can beat out the nasties in the space. I want to build some Ab-fussers and not just typical QRD's as I feel in a relatively small room I would benefit from some Abfussion as opposed to "just" wooden diffusion. Just my 2 cents as I need to lower the reverb time, yet get a lot of diffusion introduced into the listening space. I will keep updates posted. If anyone is interested I can post the before and after file data, Bare room vs. what you see in the pic above. Just looking at the 1/3 octave FR really tells nothing without, like I said digging deeper into more data.

Here are some simple diffusors I was able to build. I built 7 of these and they work very well.
They are very simple and quick to build but use a lot of wood. I'm not to sure what the price of wood is now but I built them when it was still a bit high in May 2022. The cost was 170 per 3'x6' panel.

Here's a great article from GIK Acoustics comparing QRD with poly half round.

Late last year I set my room up with bass traps and first reflection absorption with 2” FG panels. I purchased the fabric at the Raleigh Flea Market and everything else from GIK. I am looking at diffusion next, but the sound quality was dramatically improved just from the little treatment done so far. I am interested in how your room will be impacted from diffusion and where you will install it. Thank you for sharing your findings.
