Replacement transistors for 3B-ST outputs
« on: 1 Aug 2022, 03:16 am »
I damaged the left channel of each of my beloved 3B-STs. Mike @ Bryston was helpful in suggesting I swap out the working channels and I now have one "good" amp with two working channels, and one "bad" amp with two dead channels. Doing a little probing with a multimeter, it seems pretty likely I've blown a few of the output transistors--and very little else. I'm game to try replacing these myself, assuming that failure means I have to send the amp back to Bryston for repairs, which was the initial plan regardless.

Does anyone know if Bryston will sell replacement transistors (BR6522/1a) or whatever the current equivalent is? Also amenable to being talked out of this insanity...

Kudos on getting one good amp, well done.

I would call Bryson up and ask. I know with an DR-10 Classe amp another Canadian amp, I emailed and they responded quickly saying they no longer support, but provided me with the part number. Below is a thread concerning your specific parts. If it was me, I would hand off to a competent technician to repair after you have researched the part numbers and provided schematics for the tech. That said, knock yourself out if you think it the output transistors (you shorted output, frying output xsistor) and the input bias is still properly set.

This also confirms the above post of using MJ21193 and MJ21194 for the BR6521 and BR6522 transistors.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/193745336310 Newark or any of the big electronics part houses like Mouser should stock or here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/291309154505

I just received a newsletter from James Tanner wherein it stated Bryston has a new program refurbishing old amps like your and bringing them up to today's standard. This is what I would inquire about rather than trying to buy a part as they are cleaning the amp, replacing capacitors and other worn parts.
