as the title implies my questions are about this piece......

Buddy of mine discovered this when cleaning out his fathers house and thus asked me if it had any value ? So I thought i would check in here and see what the experts have to say. A little background......

It was purchased new - 2/18/61
mfg - the Voice of Music (V-M Corp, Benton Harbor, Mi)
model - 581
serial # - 268480

I have not seen the unit personally but am told it's not 'producing any sound' ?  perhaps nothing more than tubes ?

Is there any value in the piece ? recommendations for repair if so ? located in SE Pa

Voice of Music stuff is not terribly collectable, was pretty mediocre gear (equivalent to RCA, Zenith, etc.). It will cost more to restore it (electronically and cosmetically) than you'd get for it, even if you do the work yourself.
For gear of that age, you'd definitely need to replace any electrolytic caps, rubber parts (mainly, idler wheels), and stylus.  Fortunately, I guess, most of the parts are available (there's even a parts company called Voice of Music).
