RCA Interconnects from GR Research bulk cable
« on: 28 Mar 2022, 11:16 pm »
I have been braiding interconnects with individual strands from the GR Research bulk speaker cable. Three twisted-pair braided by hand and by using a hand drill and a vice. The results are sweet and revealing to my ears. Is anyone else working with this cable to make a pair of interconnects?

I recently bought some cheap 4TC from AliExpress, and made pair of interconnects with 1/4" rope in the middle and Neutik connectors on the ends. They sound great so far!
But I haven't had a chance to properly A/B them just yet.

I plan to compare them to generic RCA and a pair of Electra RCA connectors.

As a long time fan of Kimber Kables, I still use 4VS in my living room system and 4TC on my main rig.  I’ve also used PBJ for years.  They’re great cables but they were bested by Iconoclast BAV interconnects.  That is if you like a more lively and dynamic sound.  Not terribly expensive either.

I made a pair of interconnects using Kimber Kable 19 awg VSSS wire and terminated with KLE Copper Harmony. Parts Connexion sells both. The braiding was not difficult and they didn’t cost a ton either. The kicker was the sound was great. Oh and they match the color of my 8VS speaker wire that I terminated with Tube Connectors.

The KLE RCA are great and super nice to solder. The terminals are not bulky and they are spaced out nicely, making them easy to work with. Highly recommended from my experience.

Chinese stuff can be very hit or miss and more often than not, isn't what it claims to be. So "buyer beware" obviously.

And often times youll have to wait 1-2 months for "free" shipping or pay $30+ for 1 week delivery direct from china.

OCC or OFC copper is more than likely to be cheap recycled copper, plus the sleeving is likely PVC or some other plastic rather than Teflon.

The stuff I got was really stiff, and feeding a 1/4" rope through the middle was a nightmare.
I have enough ends to make another pair, but i need to find a better way to feed the rope through it... The cables are quite stiff and dont like having something fed through them or being pushed together to open up the center.

The actual Kimber Kable seems to have a different, looser style of braiding that should be much easier to work with.
Though I think there are also other versions Kimber makes from polyethylene instead of Teflon.

Still need to do some A/B testing soon.

Hmm, I just checked Kimber’s website and noticed they no longer make the VS series.  They changed their PR series by using variable strand size like the TC series but with polyethylene insulation.  And it’s a different color.

I always liked the VS series because it was half the price of TC but sounded very similar.
