Help with Surround Sound System
« on: 2 Mar 2005, 12:12 am »
I know very little about audio equipment, but I am highly interested in putting together a good surround sound system.

Of course, I want to get the best bang for my buck.  I'm not a rich man by any stretch, so I am thinking the most I would be willing to spend is around $1,000, but preferrably less.

I mostly want to use the system for audio CDs, but will use it for movies and video games as well.  But, more specifically, I have the re-release of Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral, whch is SACD and mixed in 5.1 surround.

So, what do I need to get the most out of this CD?  I guess I need an SACD player, but I'm not even sure what that is.  Then I need...what...5 speakers?  And a sub?  Man, I really have no idea...

But I do know this...I am looking for clarity and raw volume.  I want this baby to be LOUD.  OK, I want the walls in my house to shake.  I want the neighbors to complain.  But, it does need to be as clear as possible, too.

So, I would greatly appreciate if anyone could advise me in this area.  Try to tell me specifically what I need.  What brand should I get, what model # etc.  The more specific you can be, the better.  Well, thanks in advance for any help.

All for under $1000?

Seriously if you need a surround receiver, SACD player, 5 speakers,  a sub, and interconnects and cables $1000 isn't going to get much.

For $2K we can likely give you recommendations that will give you the results you want.  Like a digital Panasonic receiver or the Pioneer 1014, a Pioneer 563A universal player, speakers from Ascend Acoustics, Epos, Rockets, or Paradigm, and a sub from Hsu Research or SVS.

What do you have now?  On your budget I'd suggest building a system over time like many budget watching folks do.  Get two good front main speakers, a receiver if you need it, and a sub if you can squeeze that out of your budget.  Then add the remaining speakers as you can.

Where do you live?
Apartment or House?
Do you have any components yet?
