Thanks for most of the reply’s!  Some on here sound a little snarky; however, it is what it is…

I been doing this hobby for a long time and understand the importance of system matching.  I do not believe, in my situation, I had a system match issue.  I firmly believe the issue I had was a speaker characteristic issue.  Some people like it, I just didn’t!

That said, I really didn’t lose anything because I was able to return them with a full refund.  That’s why I didn’t buy any GR Research speaker because I can’t return them.  Again, it is what it is…

Here is what I believe about the audio industry: people have their preferences.  I have my preferences!  Are people wrong?  Am I right?  Well, not when it comes to preferences…. That’s exactly what a preference is.

Like I said in an earlier post.  I was at a store that had Devore Fidelity speakers in the main showroom.  I personally thought it was unlistenable.  Others may find it wonderful!  The store owner, I’m sure, has spent the time to set it up to his preference.  It wasn’t mine!  Vocal areas had a hardness (maybe I could call it an emptiness) that was fatiguing immediately, to my ears.

It is what it is…

Have you had your hearing checked lately?

I agree with you - I've heard plenty of very expensive systems that I didn't like.  Did that make it a bad system?  No, it made it a system that was not set up according to my preferences.

That makes it tough to commit to a kit speaker (or kit anything, really).  Can't send it back if you don't like it.  That's the downside.  The upside is that if you do like the sound, it gives you the opportunity to get very high performance gear for a pittance.

I do think with GR Research stuff, it's so popular that if you built something and didn't like it, you could pretty easily recoup your costs by selling it here on AC.

Yes, at this point I refuse to buy a speaker that is low sensitivity and low/crazy impedance.  Just won't work with my amps or my listening preferences.

Yep, I have those same priorities for the very reasons you mention. Highly efficient, tube friendly designs do a better job of recreating a live music event. This at least to my ears. I have less efficient speakers in my smaller listening room, but they're both tube friendly and
are simply a better fit for that particular room size. As always YMMV.

Maybe a little.  But if you’re hearing the same effect from very different speakers then it makes me think: What’s the common part of this?  Your ears/brain.

It’s possible I missed it but in all the talk about speakers and components, was the room itself considered? It’s more critical than matching electronics since it will color everything you put in it based on the acoustics of your environment. OP is it possibly a room issue?

Perhaps your brain should consider that I’ve listened to more than two sets of speakers?  Perhaps you should ask questions about the speakers similarities?  Like both speakers have wide baffles…. Could that be something causing this common issue?  I don’t know…

Wait, it has to be my ears/brain!  You’re right!!!  I’ll let my friend know he has an ear/brain issue as well…

I would say my listening space is good, not great!  That said, I’ve had many sets of speakers in this room.  Each set has had its own characteristics; however, the KLH had its own characteristic as well as a major flaw.  Again, my friend, who has been in this industry for a hell of a lot longer than I have, said: that’s a speaker issue!
