Measuring speaker response
« on: 26 Feb 2022, 11:19 am »
Just wondering, is there a dedicated circle/forum for speaker measurement?
In the past years I've dabbled in Loudspeaker measurement with UMIK-1 and REW, but not without problems. I would really like to sharpen my skills and learn from others.
I would like to use the same equipment and software that is preferred by most of you.
Thanks,
Tom

avnirvana.com is the home of REW so you're more likely to get specific help there.

REW is a good tool for getting in-room measurements.
It's free and fairly simple to use. And can help you spot problem areas in your room, like room modes, or more glaring issues, like a big dip in the midrange, because polarity was flipped by accident, creating a massive hole in the measured response.

But for accurate speakers measurements, you need to take the speakers outside in an open area, and get them off the ground. The higher, the more accurate the measurements will be.

Otherwise, you'll need to get your hands on a program like Clio/Clio Pocket or Klippel and take the time to learn the program and how to use gated time windows to get accurate measurements.
It also helps to have an amplifier with a Watt meter on it so you know when you're using 1 Watt.

Holm Impulse is another program that can do gated measurements and also the impulse response and it's free.  You need to supply your own mic though, I really like the Earthworks M23.

Can you recommend an amplifier that has this?

You will most likely get a better response by checking up in the “sticky” threads, specifically check the 6th one down from the top, The Owners Audition thread: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=99243.0
