Building the ‘Best Speakers in the World’.

Love this YouTuber… he’s a bit disdainful towards audiophiles…

But, this video is a treat.

It’s about building “The Best Speakers in The World!”

Which, of course, are ones you build yourself.

NB this has nothing to do with GR Research…. Well, except that they sell speaker kits….

What he doesn't mention is that being a narcissist can also help you believe the speakers you design and built yourself are "the best speakers in the world".  This reminds me of the scene in Tommy Boy where he says he "can take a dump in a box and mark it GUARANTEED".  The fact of the matter is, this guy minimizes the years of experience and knowledge it takes to really do it well, and it's likely to lead many down a trail of tears and wasted money; notwithstanding the fact that they might have some fun and will definitely learn along the way.  There's a big difference between "the best speakers in the world" and "satisfaction of doing something yourself"... as for the latter... I will still hear and be honest with myself regarding the difference.

For the prices Danny charges, which have "built-in decades of experience in making mistakes you don't have to pay for"... it is almost a Fool's Errand to go the route of thinking you're going to build "the best speakers in the world" of your own design.  If the first step is done entirely from the standpoint of just "Having Fun", maybe with some luck and obsessive compulsive disorder... you could end up surprised with the result.

This is exactly what I did. I determined what type of speakers I wanted for my room and personal tastes, and got Danny to design the crossover and Denton Woodworkers to build the cabinets. Now I have the best speakers in the world.8)

David Mellor’s description of his first two speaker builds is priceless…

He was building them for use with his band.

1st Built the boxes just big enough to fit the drivers… so the speakers would fit in his car.

2nd his car was now ahatch back & built the cabinets bigger, he’d carry one speaker at a time… but  reversed the polarity… didn’t realize it… thought it was a horrible build… sold it to a man that wanted a pair… so built a match… but it sounded great….

Anyway, he goes through the build levels:

Buy a kit with a flat pack…

Buy a kit, but build the cabinet…

Buy a kit, but assemble the cross over…

Pick your drivers & match with a prebuilt crossover…

Finally get some design software & design speaker & crossover yourself…

I personally have built kits with or without flat packs … or bought drivers then found matching prebuilt crossover…

& every one I built was “the best speaker in the world”….

Hi all.
I recently purchased a pair of (Modifed) GR Research speakers from an ex AC member.
I will not say that they are the best speakers in the whole world,
but they really sound good. I did not heard many speakers in my working life,
but up to now cannot complaint.
... and the price was so much interesting that I could not let that deal pass.

If you're happy and having fun,  :thumb:

If I thought of a 1-off that I wanted... like using one of the 2 pairs of Dynaudio Esotar tweeters I own, I'd ask Danny for guidance on picking a suitable driver.  I'd build the enclosure and send it to him and pay him to design a crossover better than I ever could.

There is "pride of doing it yourself"... there is also this:

Very cool!!!

Yep:

"Oh, I need to say this – I do NOT recommend designing your own speaker if you’re like me and have no idea what you’re doing. I took a high risk. Designing speakers seems simple, but don’t fool yourself. It ain’t cheap and you can forget about resale value. I’m guessing if these speakers were sold via an online dealer, they’d have to charge at least $12K. Plus, you need plenty of patience. It took 7 months from start to finish."

Nice accent. The idea of DIY a speaker are interesting, If one made his own speaker at his personal taste, he will able to modify it when need or improve when necessary.

Skipping through the video to the end I suspect it's all an ad to sell a book on building speakers.

That's the feeling I get when a family member buys an ultra cheap PC, then complains that it's always slow.
Well, if you didn't dig to the very bottom of the barrel...

You don't need "the most expensive" but you definitely don't want the "cheapest available" either.

The fact that Harbor Freight exists & is so successful belies this statement.

To some extent, but when you only need a tool for rare/occasional use it makes sense to go the cheap route.
But when it comes to things you use daily/regularly you want it to be reliable and able to handle the regular wear and tear of use, otherwise you're constantly having to replace it.
