A couple of things to note. Lead is a hazard to humans if it's ingested or absorbed through skin. When inside a speaker stand, it really doesn't pose much of a concern. Environmental impact is a different story. Sand is a good alternative as is steel shot.

Cat litter is kinda nebulous because not all litter is the same. The most common form is diatomaceous earth (clay). Essentially absorptive dirt. Not particularly heavy, inert or good at vibration damping, it's recommendation has always puzzled me. Perhaps there's something I don't know, but when I've seen it recommended, it's  just "cat litter".

Sand is small rocks. Bagged sand from home centers comes in a few forms. Play sand, masonry (sharp) sand, all purpose sand, etc. All of which are likely to have some moisture in them. More or less depending on how they're stored and handled. It's just not a concern when used for intended purposes.

If using sand, I think the best bet is silica sand. It's consistent in grain size, dry, and easy to come by. Used for sandblasting, masonry, ballast, filtering, etc.  One could argue there's possibility of silicosis from silica dust, but in this application and exposure level that's just so little, it seems to me a red herring at best.

Nearly as heavy  ... 25lb of Sand is the same weight as 25lbs of Shot (regardless of material), or Kitty Litter, or Feathers.

The difference comes via the volume/density of the filling.
25 lbs of feathers is a rather large, cumbersome box to handle, while 25 lbs of lead is a small brick or small box of lead shot.

I’m always worried about sand finding its way out onto the hardwood floors through a small crack. And yeah, lead is toxic.

I agree with those saying to use steel. Google “steel ballast” and you’ll find plenty of sources for it cheap. Ballast is just meant for weight, so it isn’t as smooth and round as shot. It’s cheaper than shot but works just as well for weighting speakers and stands.

Your results will depend on how you couple the speakers to the stands, but after much trial and error I found a 50:50 mix of steel shot and dry stand to be fairly inert without killing the microdynamics like lead shot can do.

I switched to kitty litter a while back. Before that I used a lead shot - sand combo. The kitty litter does the job just fine, don't feel like I'm losing anything.

Same here with the exception I'm using a "oil dry" type product. Very similar if not exactly the same as kitty litter. Does a fine job to my ear.

I used pool filter sand which is $10 to $12 for 50 pounds from Lowe's or Leslie's or any pool supply place.  It isn't nearly as fine as play sand and works really well.  I never felt that kitty litter quite did the job.

Having used both i would not use shot again. Dry sand works very well.
