Upgrade from 4B2
« on: 26 Oct 2021, 10:30 am »
At present, I have a 4B2 connected with 6 meter Van Damme 6sqmm cables to PMC Fact 12 speakers, which have a sensitivity of 84dB.  I have no problems achieving a useful sound volume.  I read a review comparing the 4B2 with the 4B3 which made me think about upgrading.   My digital sources are Esoteric, and it sounds from the review that the sound quality of the Cubed range could be complementary.
I can see a few options.  The simplest would be to buy a 4B3 and put it in the existing hi-fi rack.  If I make a new TV rack, I could put one or two amplifiers underneath the TV and have much shorter speaker cables but 3 meter interconnects from the pre amp to the power amp(s).  The options then would be to put the 4B3 there or, if I allow mission creep to have its way, a 14B3 or two 7B3s.
I would be grateful for any thoughts regarding the options I have outlined.

I upgraded from a 4bsst2 to a 14bsst2 and would never go back to a 4b . The 14bsst2 sounds better than the 4b even at low volumes . Having speakers with 84db efficiency would be a good reason to upgrade to a 14b3 . Power is a great thing and you will be able to drive these loudspeakers with ease . In your situation a 14b3 makes more sense because you wont have to change any cables out .

Hi,

Thanks, that's good advice.  I'm not sure if two 7B3s would be a substantial improvement over one 14B3, but it sure would be a lot simpler to put the 14B3 where the 4B2 is now

A few years back I upgraded from 4B2 to two 7B3 and am very happy with the purchase.  I went with two 7B3 vs a single 14B3 for the following reasons:

1) The 14B3 weighs in at 91 pounds which is difficult to move.  Each 7B3 weighs in at 53 lbs.
2) I also believe that each 7b has twice the capacitance per a channel vs. a 14b, which may improve its performance into low impedance loads.
3) The cost difference between two 7b and one 14b was minimal at the time.

Good luck,

John

Hi,

Thanks, that makes sense.  There would be the initial hassle of having to make a new rack for them, but the 7B3s would indeed be much easier to handle.

Are you using a power conditioner for the amps or do you just plug them into the wall?
