X-LS and X-CS Home Theater Build
« on: 9 Sep 2022, 04:23 am »
Building out a full 5 piece set for my media room and thought I'd share.  X-LS fronts and rears with the X-CS for the center.  Just received my woofers, tweeters, and crossover parts so I need to kick it into gear and get this project finished.  Have had the X-LS boxes built and veneered with mahogany for a while.  Still need to veneer the center channel and then stain them all.  Going to play with a reactive stain from Weatherwood on some veneer scraps before I stain the boxes.  This is my first major wood working project so I'm nervous about the finish staining.  The rest has gone great so far.  Don't want to screw it up now!

Cant wait to see the finished product and hear these in action.

Had to get my pedestal mount whitetail in the first shot.  I mean...it was sitting there so why not ;)

Really nice job so far!!  For the finish, my best advice is to get some various stains and try them out on some scrap pieces of veneer.

That Cherry will darken naturally when exposed to sunlight. If you have a spot that's nice and sunny you can expose them to the light, turning them once in a while to even it out. It only takes a few days and you can test the effect with a scrap of veneer.

Thanks!  I have plenty of smaller scraps to play with.  Going to play with the Weatherwood stuff this weekend and see if I like it.  If not will try some others.  Ended up having to buy a second sheet to do the X-CS so I'll have at least half of that leftover as well.  Leftover veneer is a great excuse to build another set of speakers right?  Perhaps a set of LGK 2.1s for my office once they get those figured out

It's actually mahogany.  Does it age in the sunlight as well?  I may try that on some scraps too if I don't like the stain results

Mahogany isn't very photoreactive. Most sanded wood will respond a little to sunlight, but if you're going to stain or dye, I wouldn't be concerned. FWIW, cherry is among the most photoreactive. You may want to sample clear directly onto the Mahogany. It's really pretty wood, although has very open grain structure.

See the last parts of this build to get an idea of what that looks like.
