They really do work well.  The tech at my local record store uses one all the time on old TT's that he buys ans sells.

The hand one for turntable covers, yes.  The one that uses your drill only on my car, which is the best by far for plastic headlight covers, but may be a little too much oomph for lightweight covers.  Also if the cover is only lightly scratched and just needs a little touch-up, Plastix from McGuire's is a one step cream with no sanding that works good as a polish.  The 3M products are restorers that requires a three step sanding with ever finer paper and includes a lubricant and preserver.
