What's this sudden trend of?...
« on: 30 May 2021, 01:10 pm »
Like the title started to ask, what's this sudden trend of everyone scribbling out the component values of the caps, resistors, etc, etc every time they post a pic of their crossovers?

I've never seen such nonsense before and I have never felt the need to do it myself with ALL of the pics I have posted over the years of crossovers and whatnot. There's no point to it.

My assumption would be out of respect for the designer. If you post pictures of everything, including all of the values, it’s easy to replicate without paying for the work that was put in to creating the crossover.

Seems reasonable and fair to me.

A bit late for that is that's the case, since people have been posting unedited crossover pics for years now, not to mention it only seems to be centered around this forum.

Besides, it's not like someone can't just open up their speaker and look at the values.

Anyway...

Danny spend a lot of time to create improved crossover designs for commercial speakers. He makes a small profit by selling kits of components (including the design) for these upgrades. It's only fair to Danny to obscure the values of the components of you are going to post pictures of his designs.

It’s IP, pure and simple.  You want to see the values, then you pay Danny.

Missing the point I think...

My point is, why did people just start doing this recently? This should have been instated many years ago, a sticky thread made about it; a forum rule if you will.

I haven't been on here for a bit, so didn't know if I missed a post about new rules or something.

I have zero issue with it, especially when crossover networks are modified per Danny's hard work. But again, the majority of crossover pics on this forum are simple upgraded components which means the values of the components do not change, and if someone wanted to purchase their components elsewhere, all they have to do is open up their very own speakers and take note of the values right in front of them.

If I were to post pics of a modified crossover per Danny's work, then I too would blank out the values, or take the pics in such a way to not see the values. That makes sense.

In fact, I just might be doing this in the somewhat near future as I am now running a pair of Klipsch RP-8000F's, and I want to perform Danny's 2.5-way mod/fix to these speakers at some point. And yes, obviously, as always, I would be purchasing the kit from Danny as I always have in the past.

And speaking of the RP-8000F, does anyone know what happened to two of the videos on Danny's YouTube page? They skip from Teck Talk 30 to 33. There's no 31 and 32.

Anyway, sorry if I ruffled anyone's feathers with this thread. Was not my intension.

Anyway, I wasn't complaining or starting an argument. I was just curious of the sudden change. That's all.

It's not all of a sudden. I've been doing it for a long time. Periodically Danny asks not to show the values. Since he doesn't make a big stink about it or take the pictures down, people may not realize the issue. I didn't in the beginning.

I'd say that for over ten years that I can remember, crossover values have been obscured around here.  It's certainly not a new thing.  I've got an upgraded crossover that Danny designed for an Altec Valencia.  It is entirely different than the original.    If you want one, you'll have to buy it from Danny.

We're not missing your point.  This is not a new practice in the GR Research circle.

Really? You began by saying "I've never seen such nonsense before … I have never felt the need to do it myself … There's no point to it."

Then you realize you were wrong and try to bloke smoke up everybody's skirts with a post saying "I have zero issue with it" and "If I were to post pics of a modified crossover per Danny's work, then I too would blank out the values…"

Huh?

I think that folks are definitely reading your posts. Don't worry. Folks are giving your opinions the full credibility they deserve.

Uh, no. Wrong... I never "realized" that I was wrong, because I wasn't wrong then and I'm still not wrong now.

I may not of worded it properly in the original post, but what I was getting at was blocking out the values on direct replacement parts. Obviously, if they are modified values per Danny, then naturally those values should be blocked out. That's a given and I didn't think I should have had the need to express that.

So, get off your high horse there pal.
