Sharp SDEX111 Whinning?
« on: 11 Mar 2005, 11:08 pm »
Hi:

I am new to this forum, but am a long time lurker.

I just got a Sharp ex111 and have noticed that on certain songs on certain cds, the unit makes a pronounced whinning sound, with the volume turned to zero.  I can hear the whinning across the room.

Has anyone had this problem.

Thanks,
Domer

I have not experienced such problem.  The only noise it produces is when I switch it on, a sort of low electronic hum that can be heard through the speakers, but as soon as I realize I heard it, it is gone.  There is something wrong with your unit, but then, you said it happens with just a couple of songs in a couple of CDs, how often is this occuring?  Some CDs do produce strange sounds, perhaps the Sharp is picking up what was never been able to be reproduced previously in other systems?  It is just a speculation.

Thanks for replying.  I agree that something may be wrong with the unit.  I don't think it is a matter of detail retrieval, because it happens when the volume is both high or at zero.  I am completely stumped.

Could it have something to do with the high sampling rate, and the speakers. Maybe ultrasonic noise?

Return it fast and try to get an unit that is fully working....it seems to be selling out fast, last time I check, it was all Sold OUT.

Agreed.   I went ahead and put the wheels in motion for a return.  I was just checking to make sure that this was not a trait common to the amp.

Many thanks for the advice.

Domer,

Is this sound coming through the speakers?

I haven't had any unexpected sounds coming through the speakers, but the CD player motor does make a bit of a whirring sound (mechanical sound). It was a bit loud the first couple of times, but quieted down to a very reasonable level.

Good luck with your unit.

KT:

No, the sound does not come through the speakers.

About how long did it take to quiet down in your unit?

Thanks,
Domer

Domer,

The louder whirring went away after two or three CDs. Now it's a slight hiss at about the level that any normal CD player or transport would make. I don't even notice it anymore.

Does the sound only happen when you start up and play a CD, or is it constant and even? Can you hear it after the CD has been loaded but isn't playing?

You should hear the normal motor noise after the CD door shuts and the TOC info is being read and, of course, as the CD is playing. The motor does not spin after you've stopped the CD, so there should be no noise then.

If it's a constant noise that doesn't sound like a quiet hiss of a transport motor running, you may have another problem.

In this case, I would try to return the unit as there's nothing you can really do on your own.

Best,
KT

KT,

The sound is in addition to the sound of the disk spinning.  It comes in and out and is audible (quite loud, actually) even if the volume is at zero.  It sounds strange, but it almost sounds like an alarm going off - sort of a bell-like quality.

I went ahead and returned the unit.  I think you are right that there is nothing I can do on my end.

Thanks very much for your help.
