James , do you know if the current BOT1s have gotten the new drive ? It was mentioned awhile ago that it was going to get the  LG replacement.

Hi

I know the BOT has been discontinued and I believe a few of them did have the new drive.

Hi Folks

The BOT was never a big seller as most people just use their computers to rip their CD's.

Also streaming is becoming so popular that even ripping CD's is on a serious decline.

I see, but I thought the idea was to have a direct method of playing cds . I, for one , prefer to play records. I have the excellent BCD3 and love it  . Please tell me you're not going to can that as well... Thanks  .

I think it was said way back that any external drive with a usb connection can feed  and play to a BDP...James is this correct or did I dream it ?

I believe any DVD drive can be used but Chris would be the one to ask.  I know some folks have used the Panasonic.

CDs are not totally dead yet according to this recent blog

https://blog.discogs.com/en/discogs-end-of-year-report-2020/?utm_source=dashboard&utm_medium=dash&utm_campaign=Discogs_Report_2021_02_11

unfortunately not enough to keep the BOT alive.  I have the BOT-1 and although it has developed problematic behavior  :? I still like playing and burning CDs.  Even though I prefer playing and am more heavily invested in streaming and vinyl hardware.   I got several friends that have large CD collections and like to B&R (Barrow & Rip).

Recently couple used BOTs appear on used market for good price but they get snapped up.

Yes that is correct, this feature of playing and ripping cd's from the beginning was intended to be used with any USB Optical drive.  The primary reason for the BOTs release was so people who wanted the feature could buy a drive that matched the BDP and could simply buy the drive with the BDP rather then go to a computer shop for it.  The only USB optical drive that I'm aware of that isn't compatible is the old Apple Super Drive.  I also recommend using a DVD drive over a Bluray drive for maximum CD compatibility.
