Casters on subs?
« on: 7 Jan 2021, 12:37 am »
Anyone here ever experiment with putting casters on their OB subs ?
I have 2 triple stacks, and they need to be constantly moved in their current situation. I just can’t afford to keep them where they sound good 24/7. The things are stupid heavy and the wheels would really help. What are the pros/ cons , sonic penalty ?

Do what you have to do. There's always trade-offs.

Imagine three 12" drivers that whose cabinet is designed specifically to minimize/eliminate movement. Well, the casters remove that advantage; however, the sonic degradation probably won't be significant enough to be too concerned about it.

If you get the ones that are grippy and not slippery, plus they have the option to lock down the wheels, I think you should be OK.

Should be fine too.  Just try to make it as rigid as possible.

Glen,

I didn’t think of this earlier but you could use magic sliders. They won’t roll around like casters will but you will be able to move them fairly easily

If you have relatively flat floors, go for Herbie’s Gliders.  I use them on both my triple OB’s and NX-Oticas’s.

Casters are an assembly of parts intended to allow movement, and in any assembly like that there's always some degree of play. My concern would be any rattles, buzzes or vibration in those parts that might be excited by specific frequencies. I'm not saying it would happen for sure, just that it's the one potential downside that occurs to me (assuming you have no need for direct coupling to your floor).

I'd check out McMaster Carr online, they will have all sorts of caster from soft rubber wheels to ones with spring suspension on them. Take a look see what may fit your needs .

Hi Glenn,
Those were all great answers to your question. I gave up on my idea as you stated you knew you were going to pay a sonic penalty. If they stay in stacks why don't you get a small hand cart/truck and duct tape a bath towel on the bottom and side. I know a DJ that made one that works great....Mark

I think that one company is called Shepherd.   It's whatever company Salamander Designs racks uses,  for their large locking casters they offer under their cabinets.  I tracked down that company,  and you can buy different versions that have flat plates that can be screwed to the bottoms of just about anything.  And they were way cheaper than ordering through Salamander.   They can handle a lot of weight,  and have rubberized non-marking 'circles' that make contact with the floor.   I seriously doubt you would notice much of any sound degradation,  in fact it might actually be an improvement.

I second the Herbie’s Gliders, I use them with my Super 7s and they work, easy to move and no rattles.

FYI, I was expecting this as I have experienced it prior, but I replaced my wheels on my Wilsons with Gaia's last night after finally getting my threaded components sorted out to re-attach them, and the bass and overall clarity locked in even tighter. Much improved over the sound with wheels. Not OB speakers, so just passing this on.

Gliders during movement would be my choice as suggested above.

Can any of the Herbies products,  suction or even be glued to a surface?   This would be for a pair of speaker stands that I move frequently across a hardwood floor.

Stupid heavy ?  I’ve had 3HP Powermatic table saws and 16” bandsaws on mobile bases in my old shop.
The trick is to temporarily lift the machine off the fixed feet, make the move and place it back down .
A bandsaw tilt mobile base is probably the most appropriate for your triple stack.

Two fixed wheels mounted on the back of the stack just barely clearing the floor.
Tilt the stack back slightly to bring the wheels into play, make your move and drop in place.
Think standard hand truck dolly handling. You can't back up a hand truck flush to the wall.

Grismmon, there are 2 types of gliders, one is designed with a dent that spikes fit into, these are what I have, the other gliders have a threaded stud that you attach to the speaker.

Yes. He also has a pair of glides with studs that go into threaded inserts. Check out the link I posted above
