X-Statiks Build with CNC
« on: 3 Dec 2020, 05:47 am »
Started drafting the parts layout for my X-Statiks build.  I'm using AutoCAD to handle the drafting as I'm very familiar with it.  Then save as a .dxf and import into Adobe Illustrator and save as a .svg file that can be plugged into Easel.  The image below is from Easel.  Once I have my CNC set up (still waiting for my shop to finish construction in the basement) I will be able to plug the gcode file into Makerverse and a few hours later have all the parts as you see here.  I've decided to cut slots into the side panels for an easier glue up.  I drafted this layout up in a few hours.  X-Voce is next!

Having more than a small interest in CNC woodworking, I'd love to hear more details about what you're planning. Your intended build material, finishing etc. I'm also ever curious about folk's CNC equipment, being fairly recent to the game.

I guess I'm encouraging you to do a build blog, which I think many here like and perhaps even find inspiring.

Hi Peter and Creative Cut.  I have a Maker Made (Maslow) M2 right here next to my desk, in the box, as I type.  Really can't wait to set it up.  The painters are painting the basement and my new shop right now, so I should be able to get in there and start working any day now.

I will absolutely be updating this thread as my builds progress.  Peter, I am also brand new to the CNC game.  I have relatively high expectations of the M2 and hope it will live up once I get it built and calibrated.  Here's a link to the M2: https://makermade.com/product/m2-automated-cutting-machine-kit/

Peter, I'm planning to find some higher quality 3/4" MDF from a hardwood/lumber company here in Denver.  I also have a shiny new Fuji Mini-Mite 4 that I plan on trying my hand at a piano black finish.  I'm still researching the best process for that.

I'll be updating as I go.  Feel free to fire off any more questions!  Thanks!

Thanks for following along hawkeyejw.  I just read through your build last night.  Very nicely done!  Anything you would do differently now that you have them finished?

Thank you for the compliment!

I would have approached finishing a bit differently. I elected to spray the black before veneering and attaching the baffles which worked but created some challenges in keeping the finish from being damaged when applying veneer. Were I to do it over, I would veneer first, then assemble, then carefully tape and paint the speakers all as one assembled product. Last would be staining the veneer and sealing.

Otherwise, my build went pretty well and other items that I may have changed I don’t think will impact you since you’ll have CNC cut panels.

That’s good to know hawkeyejw. I think I will approach it the same way. Fully assemble the cabinets then finish. This will be my first attempt at veneer. I plan to do some practice on some scrap with the full finish process before I do the speakers.

On the veneer, I used the iron on method. It seemed to work great, I guess I'll see over time how it holds up but seemed perfectly fine. I cut a white cotton undershirt open to lay flat and use for the ironing.

If I were going to do it again, I would still veneer the baffles before mounting them to the cabinet in order to have a good clean line along the edge and also to help with aligning the edges of the veneer and box on the sides.

I'lll be watching this build closely. I'm amazed by the level of skill people in this community bring to their projects - drafting, milling, finishing, etc.

I'll be spending this winter in Colorado Springs - perhaps our paths may cross one day.

More great info hawkeye.  I have wondered about the iron on method and if there was a buffer between the iron and the veneer.  Great idea on the t-shirt.  Did you use titebond or a special veneer glue like Heatlock?

Beerbellydad, love the name.  Ha!  Good to see another Coloradan on here.  It would be great to cross paths some day.

I believe it was gorilla wood glue I used which is pretty similar to titebond. Apply a good thick layer on each side and let it dry until it’s just dry to the touch. Line it up where you want and start ironing. Keep slowly moving and putting some pressure on and make sure you get everything good and hot. I had to go back over the edges a couple times but it went surprisingly easy.

Beautiful place, Colorado Springs. I visited the Air Force Academy way back when looking at colleges and that campus is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been
