ISO: Bookshelf/mini-monitors
« on: 9 Jan 2021, 12:29 am »
I've been living with a pair of wonderful sounding SP Tech Minis for the past 8+yrs and one of them has developed a crackle when I turn the volume up.  After troubleshooting everything its definitely the speaker and appears to be coming from the woofer and not the tweeter.  Anyway, the purpose of this post is to see if anyone has some interesting bookshelf speakers for sale while I figure out if its fixable.

What's your budget?

What size bookshelf speakers are acceptable (4", 5.25", 6", 7" 8" woofer)?

What sensitivity is preferred?

I have a pair of PSB B6's that I would like to sell.

Given our space limitations, size is probably the most important factor.  Need to be smaller than 11" x 22". Sensitivity isn't important as I'm driving them with an autoformer-based Mcintosh integrated (MA6800) so high sensitivity isn't required.  I'd like to try something other than a silk dome tweeter but really just looking for some decent options.  I'm in SF, CA fwiw.  Musical tastes are folk, jamband, classic rock, acid jazz, some hip hop.

Budget is flexible but <$2k.

Also consider the Elac Carina and Monitor Audio Silver 100.  I heard the Carina's at RMAF last year and was blown away  by the sound.
Another Andrew Jones winner.

This Elac Carina: https://www.stereophile.com/content/elac-carina-bs2434-loudspeaker ?

That's the one.  It was stunningly good at RMAF.  Andrew Jones was in the room and smiling ear to ear as he heard peoples comments on the speakers.

Great suggestions so far, but considering your musical tastes, you might want to check out the ATC SCM7 or larger SCM11. My friend had the smaller SCM7 and couldn't believe how loud it could play with ease regardless of the genre chosen. Something one wouldn't expect from a monitor of this size, but the SCM7 pulled it off. I'm sure the 11 would play bigger, but it's at the top of your budget. Probably make sure you can't find replacement drivers for the SP Techs first.

Two more to consider according to a friend whose had more than a dozen stand mounts pass thru his listening room in the last two years. The Silverline Minuet Grand and the JBL 4306. Both play all genres with ease and are fairly efficient. Good luck.

Thanks for all the recs....so other than the PSB B6's, does anyone have anything they're selling?

I'm most intrigued by the Ascend Acoustics Sierra-2EX based on some of the reviews I've read.  Same with the Silverline Minuets grand.  I just would prefer to not buy new speakers and find a great pair of used ones if at all possible.

thanks everyone,
scott

A crackle is usually the speaker voice coil...

it might cost 50.00 to rebuild the voice coil...

Thanks peareye...My plan is to remove the driver one of these nights to investigate.  Not sure what I might actually be looking for.  It sounds fine at lower volumes buts starts getting crackly when I turn it up a bit.  Not sure where/who to send it for repair!?  The builder is out of business (Aether/SP Tech) and I've been unable to determine whats the make/model of the drivers.

If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know.

thanks!

Some very reasonably priced and good sounding are:
B&W 686 or 685
Silverline Minuet Supreme Plus
PSB Imagine XB

I have a pair of ACI Panoramas and they are huge, so not really “bookshelf “ size, but fantastic and if you can find smaller ACIs (e.g. Sapphire) they should be great.

You should be able to contact Bob Smith here: https://www.mytdss.com/consumer-home

It has been too long since I owned a pair to remember the size of the woofer, but it should be one of these:
