Battery powered amp update.

I am down to two chassis on hand to build the Tripath 2024 based amplifier.

When those chassis are gone, I will have to raise the price of the amps to cover the additional costs of new chassis and machining.

I will be starting prototype work on two new, battery powered, Tripath based amps.

The first will be based on the Tripath 2022 chipset. This produces conservatively 2 X 50 watts into 8 ohms, 2 X 90 into 4 ohms, and can be bridged to produce 140 watts into 8 ohms. It will require 10) 6 volt SLA batteries to power it.  :o

The second will be based on the Tripath 2021B chipset. This is rated at about 15 WPC into 4 ohms and 9 wpc into 8 ohm. It will be powered by a single 12 volt SLA battery.

If I recall correctly, that is the chipset used in this Teac - AG-L800 Legacy Series A/V Surround Receiver, which is yet another example of Teac leveraging the chassis of the little amps I have from them.

50wpc of battery power.... interesting!

Wayne,

Could you toss us a bone regarding these new amps?

Size, price, features, battery operation, when?

thanks

All those parameters are being worked on.

The 50 watt amp will be close to a "standard" AC powered amp in size. Ball park will be  4-5" high 17" wide and 14" deep. This is subject to change daily.

The small amp should be able to be housed in a chassis about the same size as the 2024. 3" H x 6 1/4" W x 8 3/4" deep.

Very rough pricing will be at least $1000.00 for the 2022 chip amp and at least $500.00 for the 2021B amp.

My initial design is for straight power amp.  No controls or switches. If there iis interest, I could try out an attenuator and signal switching.

I am not sure what you mean by battery operation. They both would be powered by rechargable batteries. I will have to build them first to find out how long the charge lasts.

I will guestimate a minimum of 2-3 months for development of the first amp.

Just wondering...sonically, what differences does one expect from these different chips?

The main thing I am looking for is to open up the selection of speakers that can be used with battery power.

The 2024 amp sounds very good on high efficiency speakers, like my Horn Shoppe Horns. It does get very harsh when I try to use it on my VMPS 626Rs at anything above background music listening level.

The ScanSpeak driver system I am using in my office sounds good at most listening levels, but could use just a bit more oomph.

I am not expecting much difference in the overall sonic signature of the chipsets. The boards I will be using are better quality and there will be improvement in the quality of the parts used to stuff the boards.

Thanks Wayne.

So all the awesome things that people have been saying about the 2024 amp should apply to the new ones (if all goes well)?  Sounds exciting!

Oh, and the 2021B amp is likely to produce about 9w into 8ohms, where the 2024 amp produced around 6w into 8ohms?  Will those 3w make a difference with my 89db speakers?

You should be able to play a bit louder without compression setting in. the bass may also be a tad bit more extended.

I just received word the boards for the 2021B amp should be here in about 4 weeks. :D
