What is the best way to hook up receiver to tv when receiver has no hdmi it's an old sony, new receiver? Amp? For surround sound thanks in advance
It depends on what outputs your receiver and inputs your TV have. Without HDMI, the next best option is component audio/video. This has three RCA connections for video (red, green, and blue) and two RCA connections for audio, usually red and white or red and black. If component Audio video won't work, the last option is composite audio/video. This has three connectors, black and red for audio and yellow for video. Either of these connections will work for playing DVDs but only HDMI will work for Blu-Ray discs due to the copyright protection built into the HDMI interface.
If you want to watch Blu-Ray discs or your TV doesn't have component or composite inputs, you will need a new modern receiver. If you get a new receiver, get one with preamp outputs for all channels. This way you can add higher performing power amps down the road.
