Damping factor?

I was reading a discusion of Merlin speakers on an Audiogon forum - the speaker designer said that Bryston amps had too high a damping factor to be used with Merlins and the bass would be "too damped" for the neutral Merlins. Can somebody explain what this means?

Do a newsletter search on Bryston's web site. There are two or three issues discussing damping factor and cable resistance.
