Greetings from Sacramento, CA
« on: 14 May 2020, 06:30 am »
I’m new to Audio Circle.  I’m a working class guy who enjoys both headphones and loudspeakers.  I’m in the process of purchasing a serious two channel rig for the first time. I’ve purchased several entry level pieces throughout my life yet have always been dissatisfied with the over all sound of my system. I am ready to invest in gear that will hopefully satisfy my ears and desires. As such, I’ve been doing lots of research and I hope to learn from experienced audiophiles in this community. At this point in time I am fascinated by open baffle speakers and tube gear.  I’ve got my eyes set on Spatial M3 Sapphires and maybe a pre and amp by Don Sachs. But I’m open to suggestions...

Welcome to Audio Circle.  :D

Choice of loudspeakers is tied directly to the size and shape of the room. Other considerations are your budget and WAF. Of course there may be other considerations, but the best approach to putting a system together begins with appropriateness and cooperation between loudspeakers and the room.

Welcome!

Start shopping with speakers first that suit the room you have in mind.  Recommend doing lots of auditioning.  Take your favorite tunes that represent the widest possible spectrum of what you listen to.  And take notes to force you to really listen and make it easier to recall what you liked/disliked.  Limit yourself to 3 or 4 pieces per day to avoid listener fatigue.

Don't ignore the importance of the room.  Size (bigger is better), shape (avoid cubes), insulation (to keep noise out and music in), and being dedicated to allow for ideal setup and use of treatments.

Suggest reading Floyd Toole's "Sound Reproduction" 3rd edition to learn how speakers and subwoofers behave in-room.  Bass inherently generates very significant peaks/dips in residentially sized rooms.

Then pick the amp to serve the speaker best, or better yet let the manufacturer pick for you and go with active speakers that offer undeniable design, cost, and sonic advantages.

For sources look to CD quality streaming services, way cheaper than buying CD's or vinyl.

Hi DrJ-10. Thanks for the kind welcome. I had to google your speakers. I’d never heard about them before.

I Googled also. I remember reading about them in old issues of TAS/S'phile(I have issues going back to the 80's that I'll probably sell, which I haven't done in 20+years. Stay tuned).

I don't want to make this thread about me, so I'll keep it brief.  The Bev acoustic lens is brilliant.  His system implementation is less so.  I'm working to get rid of the junk, and keep the gold.  Sadly these things are huge, and weigh a lot.  We'll see.  Stay tuned.

Hey psyrus, I'm in Davis, and I've got a pair of X5s coming my way if you want to take a listen at some point. I just picked up an Alan Eaton 45 I plan to use with them. I've only been listening to this amp for a few days, but I'd recommend it. Alan is local to us as well, you could probably go up to his workshop and audition an amp.

Hi JTF. thanks for the message. I’d love to take you up on your offer to listen to your X5s. It would be the first time hearing a set of Spatials.

I’ve never heard of Alan Eaton. Glad to hear he’s local. Ideally, I’d like to purchase/support local businesses. I’m going to Google him now to find out more.

Most importantly, thank you for mentioning him to me. There’s so much I don’t know or haven’t been exposed to. I want to make the best informed decision once I purchase my components.
