Bryston Bit-15 or Torus RM-15 model info needed
« on: 16 May 2020, 02:21 pm »
Hello,  I currently have two, dedicated 15 amp circuits supplying my listening room.  I WILL NOT CONSIDER SWITCHING THEM TO 20 AMPS.  I have a quadraphonic system with four Magnepan 1.7is and two subwoofers, so each circuit supplies a number of pieces of equipment including a Bryston 4BST on each line.
I have never tripped a circuit breaker yet. On one of the circuits I even have a 1500 W oil-filled, space-heater that I use while warming up the system.
I am going to upgrade to a pair of 4BSST2 amps which could make the current draw tight to say the least.  I was also thinking of upgrading to two Bryston BIT-15 or Torus RM-15 units and plug the 4BSST2s into the power conditioners.
My question involves the Bryston and Torus 15 amp models.  Looking at used models, I see both the Torus and the Bryston have two different faceplates.  Both have models with flat faceplates the have lettering on them. Very stark.  I believe these are the current models.
I also see Torus RM-15s with faceplates that have black faces on the outer 1/3 of the faceplate with a center, bowed section in silver.  Bryston also shows a slightly different face, with the typical Bryston relief running across the faceplate (matching the faces of Bryston amps).  I believe these different faces are on slightly older models.
My question is: if these are older and newer models, what is the difference inside?   Do I care?

Thanks

Hi Toolbox,

You do not care.

Although I would caution you about the 15 amp versions.  With 4B's and above you may get hum from the Isolation transformer because they can draw a lot of current.

I haven't looked at 20 amp units much.  They have different transformers? Piltrons?
I seem to recall you saying a person could get an adapter to allow a 20 amp cord to fit into a 15 amp wall receptacle?

Both the Bryston BIT and the Torus are Plitron.  Yes get the 20 amp unit and use a 15 to 20 amp adapter cord.  We sell them separately.

I agree with James to get the 20. My 4B cubed sounded better plugged into the wall than the Bit 15. Definitely needs the 20.

If I changed my plugs and breaker to 20 amp would it hurt anything with my system 4B3,

No problem - I assume you mean the 4B Cubed would still run on 15 Amps from the BIT?  Remember the 20 BIT is 20 Amps on the input but 15 amps on the output.

I can't speak to the Bryston units, but an important difference between the Torus RM15 and RM20 is that the transformer in the latter is specially mounted to prevent mechanical noise. The RM20 is even quieter than my 4B3, which to my surprise emits a quiet mechanical hum. Torus also offers the RM15 Plus, which I believe offers the quieter construction.

I am sure JT can advise you how this factor applies to the Bryston units.

Hi

Yes the BIT units have the special mounting.
