Corrupted BDP-2 hard drive?
« on: 18 Apr 2020, 02:22 pm »
I think I may have pooched the internal hard drive on my BDP-2. I I have two external drives connected to it which are working normally, but the main one (Music1) is not showing up in Media Player. If I go to Dashboard and to the Disks panel, it shows up as greyed out (unmounted?). If I attempt to mount it, i get the following:

MOUNTING
Device:/dev/sdb1
To:Music1
Filesystem:exfat
Mkdir:cannot create directory  '/media/Music1':
File exists sudo: no tty present and no askpass
program specified

I am not that familiar with Linux and don't recognize the response, but it doesn’t look good. I do have a backup of the drive, but it is not current and I have added music to it since the backup. Is it possible to recover this drive and its contents? Are there Linux commands that will fix this problem? Or do I have to erase this drive and restore from the backup and then re-rip all the additional files not on the backup?

Also, the "Online Support/Contact Us" link on the Bryston website is a dead link.

Thanks in advance for any assistance that you can provide.

Yes there are Linux commands but don't do anything drastic.  Sounds like the drive is OK but the BDP can't mount it because it is running a script that is trying to mount it to /media/Music1 but that directory already exists.  That shouldn't matter but the script is aborting for some reason.

Try disconnecting the drive, power cycling the BDP so that it removes the mount point, and then reconnecting the drive.  Then it should be able to create the mount point anew.  Let me know how that goes before we try to hack it.

Thanks, Stefan.

The drive is physically mounted internally and I don't think I have the right Torx screwdriver head. I was hoping that there was a software command that I could execute to resolve this issue. I e-mailed Chris, but have received no response.

Have you tried the Mount/Unmount command in the Bryston web UI?

You can click the Disk Information button under Settings or use this direct link:

Thanks again, Stefan for trying to help me.

I got an e-mail this afternoon from Chris Rice at Bryston asking me to put my BDP into service mode. It looks like he has fixed it although I haven't received any confirmation from him yet that he is finished with it.

Oh that's good, and sorry I forgot that you already tried the Mount button.

If you can access this folder on your network then I would say he's done:

\\Bryston-bdp-2\Music1

Chris might have stepped away to give time for the database to rebuild.

I really appreciate your trying to help me. I tried playing a random track off the disk and it played perfectly. You might be right about the db. I never thought of that.

If it's working it looks like it just needed to be rebooted.

Wow. Really! That must have been one of the easiest fixes you ever had to do.  :duh: :duh:

I very much appreciate your help as I had visions of formatting the disk and restoring from a slightly out-of-date backup.

I will remember this for the next time.
