Duratex with an over coating of Granite Krylon while the Duratex was still wet.

Thank you all for the excellent examples.  Really appreciate it.  I will go with the Duratex solution.  Any helpful pointers on applying it for a fine finish?

Experiment with different rollers and with  time.... meainging, you can  change the   textrue quite a bit by when  do the final   pass on the surface.... we've found letting it dry  a bit before  doing a final pass, will provide a smoother    finish.
You  can also get  it ready to spray  I believe,  also  in white.   Once it's cured,  youi  can top coat it   if you  need a different color.

Another possibility for getting a smoother finish is to add a little more water to the Duratex. It is water soluble. Just mix it well. After the first coat I found the finish to be to rough for my taste. I read someone recommending adding water and so I did. That worked very well.

Didn't Danny cover a speaker in Duratex in one of his Tuesday Tech Talk Videos?

I know he coated the crossover board for the Klipsch RP600M in Duratex, and the NRD review model for the LGK speakers were also coated in duratex. He may have done others, but I don't remember any others off the top of my head..

When rolling it, the surface tends to be course and collects dust, which is rather difficult to remove. Needs vacuuming rather than just wiping with a cloth.
I thinned the Duratex significantly, then sprayed it with a HVLP gun with a 2.0mm nozzle. It dried to about the texture of the interior walls in my house, and wipes off easily with a microfiber cloth.

This looks great - if you get a chance, can you try to get a more close up photo? Also any idea what the ratio of duratex to water was that you used?

Edit: Also, did you start with the version they sell that is designed to be sprayed, or the standard version?

Sorry, but the forum picture upload reduces the image size to about 1/3 original , so the detail is lost.

I started with the spray version of Duracoat, added around 20 to 30% water. You would need to experiment to see how it flows out of the spraygun you are using.
Since it is waterbased, the first coat will cause the bare mdf to be a little rough. Sand that with about 220 grit 3M sandpaper and wipe it down thoroughly with a damp cloth. Then spray 2 coats consecutively and you're done.
