XSLS Encore xover
« on: 13 Mar 2021, 06:16 pm »
Does anyone know of the XSLS crossover is the same as the XLS bookshelf version ?
The reason I ask is I am tossing around the idea of converting my existing xls encores to floorstanders with a front ported cabinet. I am curious as to whether it will be as simple as swapping the drivers and xover into the new cabinet ? Or will there be more work involved ?
Also how much of an upgrade in the low end would this be? I am planning on using them with no sub relatively close to the wall (6-8 inches).

Glenn,

The crossover is the same. Without a sub you will prefer the SLS version better. It’s been awhile since I heard a pair so I can’t offer specifics. Ron P and/or others who have The SLS version can provide better info on the bass output

If you're going to do it that close to the wall, then you really need to put the port on the front of the speaker, not on the back.  That will help tighten up the bass.

Front port is the plan

I'm a bit surprised that you would not need to change the tweeter attenuation to compensate for a normal 3dB rise in output from doubling the quantity of the mid drivers.

The X-SLS does not double the quantity of the mid-bass drivers. It is a two driver speaker just like the X-LS just in a bigger cabinet. The X-CS Encore doubles the number of mid-bass drivers compared to the X-LS Encore and it does have a different crossover. The floorstanding version of the X-CS Encore is the X-MTM Encore.

To summarize, the stand mount / floorstanding versions respectively are: 2 driver - X-LS Encore / X-SLS Encore and 3 driver - X-CS Encore / X-MTM Encore.

Here's an X-SLS Encore

And Here's an X-MTM Encore

I was thinking it did. That it was an MTM version. Nice looking builds!

Sorry for a delayed reply.First time I've had the PC booted since Friday evening. Just picked up 2 pups over the week. They are a handful.

The bass is really decent on the XSLS. I made a description here: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=164677.msg1769138#msg1769138 and my observations mirrors Mike's observations. Mine are not front ported. If you have any questions, fire away.

I have since added a Servo sub in the middle.

GET THE SUBS!!! The opening notes of "No Excuses" by Alice in Chains (Unplugged) is glorious. The pulsating bass from "Burning down the house" by the Talking heads is sure to get you in trouble with the neighbors.

LOL. I already have a sub on the xls. My idea was to ditch the sub for this setup. If I was going to keep the sub, I would likely just keep them in bookshelf configuration, although they are rear ported and I wouldn’t be able to stuff them against the wall like I want to.
So my idea was , convert to front ported floor standers, ditch the sub, and put them very close to the wall next to my TV.

Since you have a sub, stuff the ports then you can move them closer to the walls.

Sorry I'm going in 5 directions at once on little sleep atm. 2nd time at the PC in 6 days.

Yes Mike is right.

I think that ditching the sub and moving to the tower versions would just be spending time and money to wind up disappointed. Once you are used to have subs.. it's all over.

try this: turn off the subs. see if you can stand it for a week's worth of listening time. there's your answer.

best of luck!

I'm also building some SLS's that will typically be up against the wall. Also plan to add a sub. I've already cut port holes in back. Is it better to plug the rear port when against the wall, remove it altogether or front port? If front ported, can it be moved up closer to the woofer to be covered by a grill? The grill would be pretty large if placed in the plan elevation but relocated to the front baffle.

If you've already drilled the holes in the back, its probably better to just plug them with a dedicated foam plug or some socks.
Especially so if you would then have to build a large grill to cover it as well.

Thanks Hobbs - that's what I was thinking, until I started overthinking...
