I'm thinking about getting a tube preamp to replace my beloved Conrad Johnson PF-R. I'm concerned about all the heat that tube equipment puts out. Anybody had any experience with using outboard cooling fans? If so where do I go to buy.

Many tube pre-amps, hybrid amps with tube pre-amps, and tubed CD players have these low power tubes inside the case.  Often in these applications the tubes are rated for 10 - 20,000 hours of use and are designed to never be turned off.  In order to prohibit condensation it's actually good for electronics to run a bit warm (say 90 degrees F).

Don't worry about it.

I've found that unless the tubed preamp goes so far as to use a tubed power supply (very few actually do), tubed preamps don't actually get all that hot...

 Thanks for the info. However I've got a good buddy of mine who has all tubed Audio Research gear and when he does some serious listening he has to turn on the home Air Conditiong unit. Even in winter! So as you can guess that's why I'm concerned about heat.

Charles,

If he's got tube amps, then yes, there will be a lot of heat generated.  But most tubed preamps use low-powered tubes that don't generate that much heat...

    For a preamp...don't even worry about it.
