Recommendations for Dark, Minimalist String Music
« on: 25 Jan 2020, 04:58 pm »
Hi.  Looking for recommendations for contemporary music that is minimalist, serious, and mournful, emphasizing strings, but acoustic and piano instrumentation are nice as well. Good examples include Nebelung, Heimsuchung (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq04XleOQaQ) and Emily Jane White's Frozen Heart (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwnCHY3PEos).

Metal or more extreme genres with a similar feel would be great, but I know is rare, e.g. My Dying Bride, Bitterness and Bereavement (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1FNuDt1mK0).

FINALLY, I have never been able to get into true classical music for some reason, so limited my request to "contemporary," but am happy to be educated on classical music that fits the mood.

Thanks!

The Shostakovich string quartets are about as dark and bleak as it gets...

Thanks everyone for your tips, some of which I knew, some I didn't.  Of the new, probably appreciating Garth Stevenson's latest (Voyages) the most so far.  I don't see how to respond to individual replies; there seems to be just one reply option that appears at whatever is the bottom of the thread?  Thanks again.  Matt

Responding to my own question: Julia Kent and Zoe Keating fit the bill.

Interesting thread... will be following.
The only thing I can think of is the Soundtrack to "Man on Fire".

Just hit "quote" at the top of the box of the post you want to reply to.  That post will appear in the dialog box, you can just back space through text that's not relevant.
