Greetings From SW Ontario
« on: 15 Jan 2020, 02:52 am »
Pffft, member since 2012, handful of posts but can't search....sigh....

Anyway.....

Greetings from London, Ont, SW Ontario - equidistant (2 hrs more or less) from Toronto, Detroit and Buffalo.

Been interested in hifi (is that word still allowed?) since the 70s and have enjoyed the now classic Marantz receivers, JBL L100s, KEF 104abs, Kenwood 500/Infinity Black Widow, Martin Logans ....sigh..... (again)

Now interested (obsessesed) with open baffles and computer audio/streaming (trying to optimize sound quality vs ease of use vs pretty user interface)

Been to AXPONA 5 years running now - not sure what will get my juices flowing this year.

Hopefully this post will allow me to search...

    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

Good to see another Canuck.

I’m just up the 401 from you, the west side of the GTA.

Welcome!

Thanks for the background info.  I'm 3 hours west of you.  Have visited Stratford several times and am planning a trip this weekend to the Niagara ice wine festival.  Not a fan of O.B., but that's a personal thing.  Have some experience with streaming, strictly from a computer dummy's perspective.  Started out using my MacBook Air ripping my CD's to iTunes, and connecting to my system via a 10ft USB cable.  Then subscribed to Tidal.  When upgrading my system a couple of years back tried a dedicated computer server with Roon.  Blending of my library with Tidal favorites on Roon was nice but not worth $500 and sound quality was no better so I sent it back.  Next tried a tricked out Apple mini with Audirvana and an assortment of hi-res files but again sounded no better and was a bit glitchy so sold it on.

Now I'm running a $2750 MSRP NAD M10 "streaming amplifier" a thoroughly modern all-in-one, flexible, great sounding, compact, stable, computer free (except as a control option) piece.  Being computer free was important as didn't like being dependent on others for help or the condescending advice computer geeks would offer.  If that's too rich for your blood NAD sells the $550 Node 2i or $1650 C658 (big step up), both of which lack built-in amplifiers.  Note that the C658 and M10 (the value leader of their Master Series) include a <500 Hz version of Dirac Live room correction DSP.
