brownaye says howdy

Hey all! I'm new to the forum but been in the hobby for at least 10 years.  I have a bad case of impulse buying coupled with strong ADHD symptoms.

My current system consists of a pair of JBL 4638 bins with 2384 horns with Faital HF200 drivers.  Bi-amp with Behringer iNuke1000 for the lows and balanced diy Firstwatt F4 monos for the tops.  Active crossover and dsp with DBx Driverack PA2.

The source is a fanless/headless Asrock J4205-ITX with Daphile OS for my music server.  That feeds a Metrum Hex dac via usb.

The Hex outputs balanced xlr to a balanced/dual mono diy/Pass BA-3 driver stage as preamp and on to Dbx PA2.

I have a couple of projects going right now.  I'm restoring a pair of '79 Klipsch LaScalas and a full rebuild of Dynakit MkIII monos.

Last week my 3 year old carefully and patiently crushed each dust cap on the 15" woofers in the pair of JBL 4638s.  I know this because his two older brothers (6 and 8) bore patient witness to the event.  I think they may have even made popcorn.

It's a real credit to my own personal growth that i didn't lose my mind when they intercepted me at the door when i got home from work.  They gleefully and un-ironically ratted their little brother out.

They walked me to the speakers and pointed to each driver in turn, inviting me to leisurely inspect the damage.

Their perverse satisfaction stemmed from their absolute certainty that someone else was going to get yelled at.  It was almost adorable.

Anyway the drivers seem to function fine; the cones are completely undamaged and no crunchy rubbing sounds when i gently move them back and forth.  15" Steel mesh protective covers and replacement dust caps have already been ordered.

Hope that wasn't too long of an introduction!  I look forward to learning about ncore amps to replace the inuke 1000 for the LF.  Because i have an NC502mp coming in the mail and no spare chassis! :green:

Happy new year!

Welcome!

Those are some beastly speakers.  As far as your boys go, just wait 10 years until you come home and can hear the system from 300 yards away (it'd be a bit harder to be as forgiving of them).   :)

They're precious gems.  So are the children i suppose :)

I'll post some pictures today; my iphone doesn't like to play nice with my windows laptop.

I only recently added the 2384 horns, replacing a pair of Eliptrac 400's still in play from the previous incarnation with LaScala bass bins.  Night and day difference imho.  Paired with the same Faital HF200 drivers, the eliptracs struggled above 12k and below 1k. Even with serious EQ'ing, they never sounded right in a two way configuration.

3 way crossed over at 6k with tweeters I was able to get a flat-enough response in my room but at the expense of point source coherence and imaging.  That wasn't a perfect solutions as i didn't have any extra amps to actively tri-amp.  I put a 1st order passive xo (basically a single film cap) so i could use the amps i had, feeding everything over 800hz 48/db slope to the mids and highs.

I just couldn't get them to integrate well with the JBL 4638s at any sane crossover point the woofers could live with.

The 2834 horns with the same drivers were a night and day difference.  Really uniform dispersion making anywhere in the room the sweet spot.

Sensitive as all heck too!  Really dynamic, effortless huge sound with mid-bass that sends sheer waves into the chest to liquefy lungs.  Pinpoint imaging with vocals and instruments carved solidly out of air with amazing control.  Even complex orchestral/choir stuff never bogs down or loses a bit of coherency.

This is my favorite configuration so far, by a long ways.  Deep and wide soundstage extends far beyond the speakers in all directions.

I live in rural NH and my closest neighbor is about 1/4 mile away. The stereo gets daily exercise :)

brownaye,

Quite the intro!

I'm really looking forward to a pic of your speakers.

It sounds as though your children are going to give you plenty of joy and surprises as they grow.  Kudos to you for handling things so well.

Welcome to AC.

Michael

I had a similar prob with an attractive silk dome mid-range and have to suck it with a vacuum duster unfortunately it never sounded the same.

What a cutie!  And obviously adventurous.

Glad to read that your speaker setup words so well.
