Hi Tony.

I'm not sure there "IS" such an animal (but I could be wrong)

If anything has tubes it is "active" as far as I know.

Unless you are talking about a 1 to 1 amp or buffer with a variable passive input

I suspect this is not at all what you are looking for, but many of the tubed integrated have passive preamp sections.  Jolida is a case in point.  Bill over at Response Audio can add remote capability to these.

IMHO, you are defeating the purpose of a passive by adding tubes to the mix.......what possible purpose could tubes bring?

Keep in mind any benefit of passive preamping or lack thereof would also hinge on the output impedance(s) of the source(s) and the input impedance of the amplifiers(s).

There's more to it than just deciding a passive is the way to go.

Best,

Paul  :D

IMO if you want balanced in and out and passive construction there is but one good choice and that is the Bent passive preamp (Noh, or equivalent).

The soon to be released Decware Z-box is a "tube cathode follower circuit" that allows impedance and volume matching with just less than unity gain (like a single source passive pre-amp).  Price should come in around $400, but no remote.

Quicksilver Audio has a very interesting line stage preamplifier with remote control, check it out.

tdangelo, there is no such thing call passive tube preamp.  A legitimate passive controller can be operate without power.  All others should not be called passive preamp.  Any preamp with an active buffer stage even without gain is unity gain line stage.

well, I did a 180 and bought a Tact RCS 2.0S ;)  Hopefully I'll like the preamp in it.  Thanks for all the help.
